linux system owners with web site please post

I just finished doing about 7 hours worth of searching, I browsed and searched the forums... I also went to this site http://www.mp3car.com/usersites/listings/ which only has ONE linux system out of the 29 pages of system....

I am trying to find all of the linux systems out there that have a web site showing how they did what, what they are using, etc.

I find so many Windows system... and on most of those site the people will even say the boot time sucks, unstable etc, well Linux is very much more difficult... I have never even used Linux myself... but believe that doing something right is the only way to do something... i dont care how much easier it is to use windows....

anyways any people out there with a linux system please post/strut your killer setup... I'm seriously dieing to check some out. would help me alot with planning the last of my setup...

go to www.mp3projects.com , they have a wealth of info about mp3 computer setups. mostly not for car installs , but the idea is the same. also there was a howto that described how to make a boot disk that had a web server and an mp3 player on a floopy. you controled the mp3 computer via a web browser , and you could hack that up to fit your need. but i cant remember where it was.
anyway think busybox and a boot disk and mpg123

I think that www.dashpc.com functions as a hub for linux based installs, and if not, its still 1 very sweet linux install (into a dub! yeah!).

ok I want to use a version of Linux that uses a gui interface... but im not sure if redhat is the way i want to go because i think its got a bit more than i actually need.... does any linux pros have a list of all the mods/versions of linux that use a gui interface so I can choose from them the one that is the most hacked down and boots the quickest.... I now know that linux is the OS i want to use but am unsure what version of linux... I want to be use whatever is best for having a VGA TFT and having dvd,dvix,gps,mp3,emu

Thanks you Maveric SOOOOOOO much that examples page is just what i needed..... the other one i went to just had to many windows setup with this exmples thing i can search for only linux installs using a Full screen LCD

any linux distro can be stripped down to a bare min. You can even make redhat install to like 150 megs. Also any linux distro you can make into a gui system. For the fastest startup I'd only run a window manager like fluxbox or blackbox as your gui. Stay away from kde and gnome as they are complete desktop enviroments. You can really make the linux bootup fly if you disable a lot of un-needed services. The big one on redhat is kudzu. Really your choice is to run whatever distro you feel comfy with. I'm a big time linux user but i use windows on my carpc. crashing is never really a factor and bootup is good for xp around 35 seconds. One reason crashing isn't a factor is cause i'm not loading a lot of random programs.

ok i *Finally* decided on my OS... after very much testing benchmarking..... I now use Win98Micro. sooooo very nice..... I used linux and it is seriously nice... if i ever have 2 home desktops i will probably use it on one of them... but for a carputer i think windows suits my personal needs better because if you tweak windows enough you can get it the way you want it.... after I am totally done i'll throw up some statistics for you guys but its look a hell of a lot better than it did yesterday.

ok I read through every thread on this forum that i could find dealing with boot times... I have made a list of things to do... I currently have winamp version 2.7 and windows 98micro. on my computer. It boots from cold boot (turn on power switch) to music in 19 seconds..... this is far better than i could have hoped for.... there are two things in the list below that i have not even tried yet cause lets face it 19 seconds is quick enough.... the two i havent even done was the shell thing right now its non shell, and i havent downloaded tweak ui yet... but i did all the other stuff below and i also set a few of the common since settings in bios for a quicker boot... I hope this can help some people. Thanks to everyone on the board that helps us newbies out you guys rock :)

Windows

1) monitor settings.. and the feature "Auto Detect Plug and Play Monitor" was checked, i unchecked it

2) Open 2 or more files as shell (using the shell= command).
very simple...just open up notepad and write:

@echo
c:\whateverdir\someprogram.exe
c:\anotherprogram.exe

then save it as a .bat file. Then change your shell to that batch file.

3) 98Lite (takes out ALL the crap) 98lite Professional v4.6

4) msconfig - remove scandisk checking

5) msdos.sys: Doublebuffer=1, Dblspace=0, Drvspace=0, Logo=0, Bootdelay=0, DisableLog=1

6) config.sys: add the line: Stacks=0,0

7) turn off virtual memory

8) Run your startup app from within system.ini, alter the 'shell=explorer.exe' line to point to your startup.exe file. (This too has been covered here!)

9) checkout tweak ui

10) remove extra fonts, remove extra config.sys and autoexec.bat lines, bypass any logins

ok now that i am for sure decided on using windows im not positive on which version of winamp I want to run.... what version of winamp do you guys like best?

I was so pleased with my boot time and how clean the 98micro install was on my carputer, that I formated my hard drive on my home desktop machine and installed 98micro on it, I did the same tweaks i did to the other one except with this one after it was done installing windows I added internet explorer 5 to it. My total boot time from cold boot to finished loading windows is 22seconds... most of the hardware is different too... so it just goes to show that if you install it small and do all possible tweaks you can usually get a low boot time unless your bios post is like 90% of your problem... the bios post on both of these lasts about 12 to 15 seconds...

i'd also run 2.80 unless you need the video options of winamp3.. but i'd hold off on that till they make the load time a bit better.
