Pioneer Ip Bus: What can it control?

I currently own a DEH-P690UB head unit and I know that it can control a dvd player\changer through the ip bus. I was wondering if anyone knows of some kind of portable media player that would interface with the ip bus on the head unit so I could control it via the head unit. I want to be able to have all my movies on some kind of hard drive player that can be controlled with my pioneer, and send it's output to a screen.

And I know everyone is gonna tell me to get a computer but I don't really want to go that route. So if anyone knows of such a thing I would definitely appreciate a heads up.

Well that would definitely be the hardware of choice I think. But it looks like it's limited to using a pc unless it can be programmed to another device. But I am not really sure of any devices that could be controlled via usb.

Sorry, didn't read your post properly. Just read the first bit and assumed (because this is a Computer in the car based forum) that you wanted to control a PC.

I think the only things that the Pioneer IP BUS will control is other pioneer based products with it built in. See if Pioneer do any Media players that have IP bus.

I'm wondering if the usb port on the deck will allow me to access the videos on a video ipod or something similar and then have an av cord outputting from the ipod to a screen. Or another sweet idea if it exists would be to find an overhead screen with usb capabilities and just use that to access all my videos from a separate hard-drive.

Something to ponder over anyways. Hopefully I can come up with an idea.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but IMO there is no point in adding a monitor, DVD player, and hard drive to a head unit. you'll end up spending alot of money for a very limited system.

what is the main reason why you don't want a carputer? parts are cheaper than ever, and there are some new products out that make the installation a breeze. you should really consider a carputer over expanding a proprietary platform.

that being said, if you still don't want to consider a carputer, then I would suggest you replace your current head unit with a DVD head unit instead. depending on the model and features, it will likely be cheaper then buying all those components separately. it will play and display your DVDs/videos without needing additional components.

double-DIN is the way to go if you have the room. if double-DIN is too big then there are smaller models that fit single-DIN openings (the faceplate is larger) than the opening.
