My computer won't boot - please help me!

I've got quite the problem here now. When I turn on my computer it goes directly to a black screen with white lettering:

Quote:
The last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to restart again?

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
Continue with system restart

The problem is I've hooked up a USB keyboard directly to the computer and it doesn't allow me to change or choose an option. It does nothing and I have no idea how to get the computer booted. HELP? Thanks!

What OS? Is that message a BIOS message or a Windows message or what?

Sorry, didn't know what information you need. It's Windows XP Professional with a few things stripped out of it and I don't think it's a Windows message. It says I can hit DEL to enter the SETUP and then it goes to this screen.

That looks like no BIOS message I have ever seen- too wordy.
I freely admit I haven't played with anything NEW for a few years though.

But I think it is a winblows error.

I would try booting from a windows install cd or other bootable cd or media.

My guess at this point is that something windows says is "vital" has been messed up.

ETA If it is a bios message, you may have a problem with your drive- tossing another one in may at least boot the system

Ah, it's definitely a BIOS message then.

Does your motherboard have a standard old school PS2 keyboard plug? You will want to plug an old cheap keyboard in and hit whatever key to get through the message.

I can't try the Windows CD unfortunately, I don't have a CD drive besides the one that's in my laptop. But I will try the PS/2 keyboard and post back to let you know how it worked.......got to hunt one down first though.

My apologies, I figured I'd find it if I searched. But then you'd have only 1/100 of the posts because most of the stuff here has been covered before. But I did manage to fix it with the PS/2 keyboard, I forgot I had a USB-PS/2 adapter! It works perfect now, with no other modifications, thanks guys!
