What can your PC do

I'm trying to get more ideas on what else our AutoPC can do besides playing audio/video such as MP3, midi, WAV, AVI, MPEG, VCD, DVD and so on. The reason I'm posting this thread is because we can get wild ideas from eachother. Please list ALL of your out of the ordinary functions your AutoPC can do. This includes touch screen, GPS, remote power up. Please don't post any wild ideas that you thought up but haven't built yet. Be prepared to explain in details on how you achieve your functions so others can also apply your idea to their setup. If you want me to, I'll edit this thread and post all of my PC's functions.

Mine can record radio to a .wav, and can sync mp3s wirelessly with my main PC when I drive into the garage.

Ive got a USB pen drive on my keyring which I fill with mp3's where ever I can get them, then when Im in the car I just plug it into a socket on my dash and the comp copies all the songs to its hard drive. Its 64mb, which equates to about one album. Great for picking up songs quickly instead of having to connect a network cable or take the hard drive out. Really useful when someone plays you a song and you can immediately take a copy.

In my former truck, I had a Parallel relay card and some software I wrote to control up to 8 switches. I had the door locks, some neon lights, and my rear window defroster all running off this card.

I also (shortly before I sold the truck) experimented with using the relay card to start the truck. With VNC software and an IP address, this meant that I could have parked my truck in Starkville, MS, flown to Paris, and started my truck (or unlock it, etc.)

i can play nes in my car via emulator.. but the coolest thing I'm gonna install soon is I got a scrolling LED board. Like the ones that are hanging in stores. Its controlled via the serial port and computer software. I'm gonna mount in in the back window of my explorer and scroll song info and maybe random messages.. and let the passanger write to people behind me. Let the road rage begin!

Mine does Touch screen, plays DVDs ripped into the HDD (great for borrowing movies from friends for a few minutes), region free hacked DVD/CDR/CDRW combo drive, burns CDRs and CDRWs, Linksys USB 802.11B WiFi adapter for wireless file transfer, VNC desktop control and broadband internet while in the garage, 2 GPS receivers Copilot for step by step nav and Garmin GPS16 with Street Atlas for current position display, Cliffnet G5 Alarm control for AvantGuard4 and SmartWindows4. It allows touch screen vehicle start up, lock, unlock, open driver door, open pass door, roll windows up and down turn on head/parking lights, monitor alarm status, recall recent alarm triggers, OBD-II virtual dashboard, sinewave and tone generater, phone number search with advanced reverse look up, center console that holds 2 extra large drinks, a wireless rechargeable RF mouse, and Nokia 8290 cell phone. The USB IrDA receiver is mounted underneath the Nokia phone. I set the phone down on the console, the PC recognize the phone. Personalize my cellphone with my PC. Internet anywhere via Nokia phone and IrDA port. Steel plated arm rest with slide out mouse pad, remote PC power up via alarm's AUX output, 3 position switch to allow the PC and audio system to be on with out the key. IRman with Sharp VCR remote to control Winamp and Power DVD, Port relocated to center console for easy access to USB firewire Mic in, Line in, Line out, and a plug and play keyboard port. 27GB external USB2.0/firewire HDD. Onboard 45A 13.8V regulated power supply for when I have to live in my truck for a night or two. I also have a serial relay control module with 8 relay control. It's already wired for windows locks and doors open. I still need software for it. It also allows controlling from the net. The TV tuner is controlled by the SONY deck so that doesn't count.

we should start an mp3car insurance fund.. the fund would be put towards getting a guy started on his project again and towards hunting down and castrating the guy who steal 'em.

C!

I've always wanted one too. I can tell the the people in front of me to quit riding on his brakes or turn off the blinkers or turn on the lights at night or fix the headlight or tail lights or fix their flat or get their tires balanced so it doesnt look like its gonna fly off and kill somebody.

NO!! I dont want him to register on this board. We're all friendly people who are eager to help. I don't wanna help someone who needs help on some schit he stoled and not knowing that he stold the schit. Let him figure it out. If he cant figure it out, then he shouldnt have stolen it in the first place.

I don't like that feature. I don't think I'm gonna install that in my setup

You're talking the job of an insurance company, the police department and an ultimate fighting champion

OK,this thread shows me that a computer can do a lot.
Untill now, i was just thinking on ; GPS, play movies, (music, mp3, cd i play on my radio), and park easier.(i m thinking of building web-csam into my bumper so i can see how much place i've got when i'm parking.) and maybe it is also handy, when you have an accident to take a screenshot so you have the car his numberplate ?

I really like the idea of say, 2 usb video cameras, one by the licance plate (backing up) and one on the right hand side (how close am I to the curb) I already scratched my rims once... that really sucked, these nice chrome rims have a scratch in them now... and usb-web-cams are really really cheap.

Right now, my (uninstalled) computer has the following functionality...
The datalux sits next to the opus to keep it from moving around when I open the drawer of the file cabinit they both sit in. the EPIA mobo represents a "must lose" priority with the post office, as it is in the mail.
