I don't recommend Navit (unless you're John McClain)

If you're thinking about getting a GPS system, may I recommend a commercially available system that is built for your specific location (like the United States) as opposed to the Free Software Navit, using the Open Street Map system?

Here's why you want to avoid Navit and OSM at all costs: it tries to kill you.

Everything is fine up until it decides that the best route would be to use the expressway. Now, ignoring local traffic conditions, this would seem like the best route ... but the path taken is a tad heroic.

First, it instructs you to get on the wrong parkway, then make a SHARP RIGHT using your handbreak and get on the expressway using the offramp.

Second, it tells you to take a SHARP RIGHT off of the expressway overpass and on to the local street.

I hope you have good shocks.

Navit: for those of us who want to be able to shout "Yippie Kay Yay, Mother'efer!" in our daily lives.

Funny! My iGuidance tries to get me to turn onto roads below me as well. As if they planned an off ramp but never made it.

I was going to correct the spelling, but then I couldn't bring myself to care how a fictional characters name is spelled

With a version such as 0.1.1 I also don't recommend anyone actually use it for much else other than testing purposes

It's actually not navit's fault. It's the main flaw in the original TIGER data that got imported into OpenStreetMaps.

There's nothing wrong with a 0.x.x release. Most open source projects start out at 0.1 instead of 1.0 like commercial software. The version of the software is almost as irrelevant as irrelevant can get. Look at the window's NT Kernel now version 7.0? Yet the Linux Kernel which releases more often and has been in development for over 10 years is only 2.6.30? It'll probably stay at 2.6.xx for a few more years to add to the illustration. I would dare bet most software used in Linux servers are 0.x.x versions, yet they are stable and secure.
