If your getting BSOD during OS install, 9 times outta 10 it's bad memory...
Try another stick, or double check your RAM timings in the BIOS...they maybe too aggressive.

1GB is plenty for a car PC, especially when using hibernation...
Kingston is good...maybe you can RMA it?
OCZ, Mushkin are also good...
Check your mainboard specs for compatibility as well.

I bought some cheap Crucial ($17 for 2GB) memory from newegg for my LF2. Its been running pretty solid. Also are you using IDE or SATA for the HDD? If it is IDE try another cable even though it sounds like a memory issue.

Here's the memory I ordered but it looks like it has gone up in price
