That's a nice scam they run on you on the mifi .... here is the thing ....

They force you into a 1 year contract so it's $59 x 12 so $708 for the year ... plus tax lets say $6 per month .. plus 1 time setup fee $35 setup fee .. so it's $815 for the year.

Autonet mobile: $199 + $35 setup fee +$29 per month .. taxes are already built into fee so it's $29 FLAT fee per month.

so $29 per month x 12 + $35 setup + $199 = $746 for the year. Almost $100 less per year ... AND it actually works while you are in motion .... mifi is NOT designed for use while in motion.... and it only stays charged for like 3 hours.

Okay, here's one little problem I've noticed.

Autonet has 2 different plans, the $29 which is a 1 gig limited plan, and a $59 plan, which limits you to 5 gigs.

This is directly from their site http://www.autonetmobile.com/service/

Here's the other thing .. for $29 you actually can use more than a gig... they will not charge you if you go over.... they will only ask you to switch plans if you habitually go WAY over the 1 gig mark.

The reason they gave me was that 95% of the users of Autonet never get anywhere near 1 gig because of the way autonet manages the data for you.

For example... lets say you are downloading a file that is 3 megs in size... halfway through you lose connection .. well if you are using mifi or a cell card... you will pay for that half downloaded file and you will then restart your download and you will end up paying for that full download once it's completed . considering it is actually successful.

Autonet will actually put your data in a holding pattern until you reconnect and then restart the download... this causes all of the Autonet users to use much less data ... costing Autonet less money and allowing them to charge $29 instead of $59

Yeah, there is that. I keep forgetting that I probably wont be using an automotive connection the same as I use my home connection. On my home connection, I can exceed 5 gigs of data per DAY...

Well they just came out with thedatajack, and that is unlimited. There is no 5gb limit. You can use 20gb if you want. Its only 39.99 so that seems like a good deal.

I have no CarPC installed, so I have not been able to try this out.... Hopefully sometime next year.
