Crazy problem - GPS causes hard drive spindown on resume. Please help!

Hello,

Lately I've been experiencing the strangest problem. If my BU-353 GPS is connected to my system and I hibernate the PC, I cannot resume successfully. I get as far as the "Resuming From Hibernation" screen and upon completion of the little timeline bar I can actually hear my hard drive spin down. At this point the computer freezes, obviously, until I do a hard shutdown.

Any ideas why this might be? I have tried it Xport running and without. Anything else connected via USB is no problem. Only the GPS causes this. GPS functions properly if I do a normal bootup or shutdown.

Please help! I'm pulling my hair out here...

what kind of power supply are you using? have you compared the spec'd output capabilities of your power supply versus how much power you are drawing? could be that your gps is pushing your 5V line past its limit.

m2-atx. And I just removed it from the car and used it indoors, with a different PSU, but the same results.

Weird thing is, this setup worked find for a while. So I'm pretty sure it's not a power issue.

Well, FWIW, I think I traced the problem to its source -- a nasty driver conflict. After following a link on the xport download page, I downloaded what I thought was the correct driver for my BU-323: the PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v10518.zip drivers. This causes all sorts of havoc. I eventually went back to the drivers linked on this page: http://www.usglobalsat.com/p-62-bu-353-w.aspx and all seems back to normal now.

Whew...

Very interesting... glad you got it working.

I used to have an intermittent bootup problem with a Holux gps, but I realized the problem only occured when it was scorching hot outside.. and I had the gps sitting on my dash. Eventually replaced it with the BU-353 and haven't had a problem since.

Cheers

Curiosity will become famous soon enough
Yes, interesting. Prolific makes the chips for those but the problem I think is that they've made revisions that make them incompatible with each other, but they still have the same VID/PID. So any driver will install for any of them. Of the 2 on their site, the GPS version works with the BU-353 and other non-GPS devices I've used. The top one didn't work at all with one device I had.
