Mitsibishi 380 Exisiting Head Unit Integration
Hi folks!
This is my first time posting here and my first project of this sort
Basically I'm looking at the possible options that I have for upgrading my car entertainment system. Currently I have the factory fitting 6 CD stacker (MP3 readable), with all the radio etc, but there is not standard Aux In line. I 'collect' a lot of music and get a little annoyed sometimes because I cannot take my entire music and DVD collection on the road with me.
I decided to see what my options were regarding installing an extrenal hard drive and aux port. I've since then discovered this (and a few others) website and my idea's have broadened!
My first foreseeable problem is the existing head unit screen in the car. It is a small screen (approx. 4" wide 2" tall) and displays cooling information, track info (not ID3 tags or anything though) and you can access some user definable car settings (lights, wipers etc) from it also. There are three buttons that sit just under the screen that are used for selections.
My question (after a very long background!) is: How easy is it to replace and tap into the existing signals for the display? I'd like to get a 7" screen and on one of the selectable 'displays' (think: Windows) I'd like this information to be accessable still.
Any info, points to info, would be great. Thanks!

depedning on the type of signals, you might be able to use a fusion brain, or a similar device to read the signal, and then put in a computer interface...

Thanks for that, I'll go see what I can find. I'm getting a wiing diagram for my car today hopefully so I'm hoping to see all the info that I need there.
And what do you mean by depending on what sort of signal? Do you mean protocol or something that might not be recognised? Or something else?

FINALLY! i have the US twin of your car, the galant, and ive fully integrated a carpc. and yes you can do aux in on your radio. hold down the cd button, and aux should pop up on the screen. ill post pics of what i did with my car soon, but essentially its the best (and only way) to be done with out cars imo. for the aux in you have to buy a cable that connects into 3 pins on the back of the radio. i have an extra one laying around. i bought it for 40 but ill sell it for 30 + shipping. anyway good to finally see another galant (380) carpc, it was getting lonely

either you, or someone else would need to tell the fusion brain what type of signal to expect, and what to do with it(when 'x' wire pulses/chants/talks/turns on/etc..., 'x' gauge should read...) and that is as much as i know about computer/factory integration (i would prefer to rip out all the factory stuff and install my own wire and controllers :0 ).

i've looked into getting that small screen displayed on the 7in, and it is much much harder to do than one would think. tbh i dont think its worth it, because whatever front end you use, its not going to mesh in cleanly. itll either be obtrusive or youll have to dig for it.

That looks awesome! Heh and pretty much how I wanted mine to look. Good to know it's achievable!
Can I ask; How did you make (or where did you get) the cover for the 7"?
One of my concerns was that it wouldn't look good up there unless I could make it look like that was where it belonged. So I though about carefully cutting the top of the dash and making it motorized. Though I've still to take of the dash and see what sort of room there is.
So you've just relocated the screen... Do teh original buttons still work with that to change the settings? To be honest I'm only really fussed about access to the settings. I could happily do away with the rest of the screens available. Is is not as simple as feeding the screen display into the larger screen?
Hmm ok thanks for that, I'll have to see what this weekend brings up in terms of research into processing/relocating those signals.

Sorry just noticed this as well (I was too excited to look at the pictures!), sounds good. I'll have a look at the back and see what's needed for the aux cable but chances are I might take you up on that if there's nothing a bit closer to home (Oz).

I couldn't get this to work though you have more information on your wee screen that I do (compass for example) so it's possible that the Galant is a little more kitted out.

then youll have to use an FM modulator to get sound into your system. Its the only option for our cars, other than ripping out hte headunit. For the screen i used the bezel for the navi option that comes with the ralliart. It cost somewhere around $40 and my lilliput 7in fits in it perfectly, the only thing was that i had to put it upside down, so make sure whatever screen u use has that option.

Ok, I'll go look to see if I can find that bezel. I might give Mitsibishi or one of the local dealers to see if they can offer an upgrade or have any ideas about getting a line in for audio. I really don't want to use an FM modulator. Not really the 'finished' product I'm after
Thanks again
