Sub box rattling!!!

There is a HORRIBLE rattling in my sub box. It's fiberglass (back and bottom) and 3/4" MDF (sides and front). The box is sturdy and is wedged in tightly. I have also put sound deadener all over the floor and back wall (haven't got to the doors yet).

So... any suggestions?

Also I might mention that the subs are a TIGHT fit. The subs actually touch the back of the box, but barely. Like one corner of the magnet touches.. not all of it.

What should I do?

Here it all is. I'm still upholstering the amp rack. The 2 lines in the vinyl aren't wrinkles... just a little dirt. I've just installed it. I'll clean it later I promise.

BTW.. the sub box is the black part showing through. The grey vinyled part is just the amp rack / cover

How many layers of fiberglass did you lay down ?
Were their air bubbles in the fiberglass?
You could mix up so resin ,hardener and coped up fiberglass
mat and add to the inside were the sub does not hit the box.

So you think it's the box's construction huh? d@*%it! I figured that was the culprit.

I laid 4 -5 layers of fiberglass ( 5 but I'm sure I sanded through 1 in some places).

There were some bubbles but nothing major.

10 layers of fiberglass = 1/2" MDF
bubbles are your weak part of your box.

The rattling is prolly the magnets tapping the inside of the box, if they are that close. If the bass hits hard enough, most boxes will flex slightly, and your subs might even be moving a bit. I had the same problem before..just put some cotton stuffing between the sub and wall if you can.

I was under the impression that 5 layers was plenty. Fiberglass is a lot stronger than MDF.

1) did you insert fibrous material inside the box
2) make sure the box has NO SPACE TO MOVE between the metal in the back and the plastic cover. You may need to bolt the box to the frame otherwise...

1) no

2) it doesn't. I had to beat it with a rubber mallet to get it into position.

That may be exactly your problem. Your box may be tight in the space BUT it may not be tight all the way around and some areas may have tiny airspace to "rattle".

I was going to suggest removing the bin from its spot and running it free, to test it, but judging from the pics, that looks like a pile of work. sorry buddy...

ddt,
I would have to go with what xjrunner said about the magnet and box flex. I was going to post that prior to reading his post.

I'd try that before going into all sorts of box alterations.

It's an exact mold of the space it sits in. Fiberglass....

I'd be willing to bet it's where your magnet is touching your box.

Put a thin shim behing your subwoofers gaskets to bring it out a **** hair or so
