Thumbs down Experience with mini-box.com

i placed an order for the new DC-DC USB device on Saturday, Oct 10th. it seems as they use paypal merchant services for credit card transactions. i put in all my information, submitted the order and the transaction went through, i also got a confirmation email.
on Monday, Oct 12th i got an email from mini-box stating that they cant verify my address (after paypal already verified it), the shipping address and the billing address are the same, which is my home address. i called the phone number that appeared on the email and the person i spoke to said that the product is being shipped from brazil, and since they cant verify my address they want me to email them a physical copy of my credit card.
i have never heard of anything like that other then scammers
i refused to send them a copy of my card, and asked them to cancel my order and issue me a refund. they agreed to do it, and said it takes up to 24 hours to refund, which sounds like another lie, because paypal can make an immediate refund upon canceling the order.
as you can see, its been more than 24 hours, i have not yet received a refund.
i will call my bank tomorrow and file a claim for this transaction.

i am not sure what kind of business they are running, but these things just seem wrong to me.

please comment with opinions, own experiences...

Your overreacting.....and just because paypal can issue immediate refunds doesn't mean credit card companies can. Many times it can take 2-3 days for the full refund to show up on your bill...even if its issued the next day.

You do realize that they were only requesting a copy of your card to verify that you are who you say you are. If you didn't make any false claims, why are you so worried about sending them proof that you do in fact have the card?

Also, like justchat_1 said, credit card companies take several business days to issue refunds on your bill. If you call the actual credit card company and request a balance through the phone, they have the up-to-date information. Any other source (even their websites) are not updated for several days.

Seems legit to me.

i am not so worried ab out the refund, as this is something i can take care of with my bank, my problem with this situation is the fact that paypal procced the card and approved it, paypal did verify the address. i have made over 200 online purchases and i NEVER had to send a copy of my card to verify its me, thats why we verify address, phone number, CVV.... is everything is verified why doesnt anybody request a copy of the card ?!

I know people have complained about mp3car asking for the same information. Apparently, the smaller the company, the tighter the restriction for credit card verification.

So a company is taking an extra step to make sure you are not being ripped off and you are *****ing? I don't understand the complaint.

Does the address on your credit card match the shipping address you gave them? Because paypal will verify your address even if it does not match your credit card. Smaller companies, on the other hand, will compare the two to prevent fraud.

I think i'm missing something.. why is mini-box shipping an item from Brazil? In all honesty i probably would have done the same thing you did by cancelling the order.. but i do agree with the other people that have said you're worried about the refund too early in the ballgame.

You should not be concerned - this is fairly standard for small companies, otherwise mp3Car or mini box is at serious risk for fraud.

We no longer do this and simply request that the customer pay via paypal, because so many customers had a similar reaction to yours. This is not a scam, they just want to see an actual document copy to protect themselves. If you are not comfortable with this, i suggest you send them a wire or pay via paypal.

Ya, I barely managed to get a credit card order into mp3car only because I've been on the forums for so long, for Canada it's supposed to be Paypal only (thanks by the way). It sounds pretty standard to me but to be honest I would have canceled it too if they did that. I once ordered from Tiger Direct online for a $280 video camera and they requested a fax of my driver's license or other identification. I asked why and they said it was standard for orders above $500......math fail? So I canceled the order and won't deal with them again.

yes justchat, the address i gave them is the same as on my bank account, i also just ordered the zotac mobo from newegg with no problems, i know newegg is very strict about address and phone number verifcation, i received that mobo in 3 days. i make tons of online purchases. and to request a copy of the credit card as verification, doesnt seem like the right way to verify information, what if somebody stole my card, places an order for his own address and they ask him to send them a copy of the card to verify that he stole it ???? and yet especially after he said brazil, there is absolutely no $%^&ing way i am sending my card there lol
i understand that companies want to be sure there is no fraud... but as i said thats why we have the CVV code on the back of the card to verify that the purchaser has the actual card. that information was also verified when placing the order....
the refund is tha last thing i am worried about, thats something i can take care of with my bank or BBB if i have to...

you should never have to send a physical picture of your card online, that's what the verification number and address is suppose to be for!

Punky, i think so too.
even though some of the above posts justify such procedure, i would like an explanation from the vendor on this matter...

He did pay with PayPal.

I'm with the OP on this one. I wouldn't send a scan of the CC either, especially out of the country.
