Alternate locations for head unit?

With a in-dash touch screen in the DIN, I'm left with a head unit that I don't want to use but I guess I will use it for connecting the computer audio to the stock car speakers. Where would you guys suggest putting the head unit? It's a Pioneer 4400... if there's a way to hook the computer up to the stock speakers without the head unit I'd be glad to hear it. Thanks.

do a little searching on this site about hooking up your computer to an amplifier. I know many people have done this and simply scrapped the head unit.

Only problem with this is that I'm stuck with buying an amp then... Will do though, thanks for the advice.

Oh snap, I get it (sorry, as already stated *I think* I'm not the best at car audio...)... set the source (or whatever) to Aux-In... so instead of it playing the radio (FM1, FM2, etc...) or the CD it just plays what's going into the Aux-In out to the speakers? Sounds easy enough!

One question, the VIA Epia M9000 Mini-ITX (I might get that, or the step above) has...

Onboard Audio - VIA VT1616 6 channel AC'97 Codec

...now what cabling/adapters would be necessary to get the audio from those ports to the Aux-In? I haven't seen the Aux-In (Best Buy installed my deck... ) so I don't know what it looks like.

Oh, so the Aux-In uses RCA cables? I'm sure I can get that adapter at radio shack or off eBay for even cheaper maybe. I'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm gonna be a poor college kid living with his parents this fall so I wan't to make sure I set everything up right the first time.

ahh yes poor college kid, this hobby does that to ya!

where ya at in minnesota? i'm at the U Twin Cities.

samc has the right idea, put it anywhere and just leave it at AUX mode, granted to control volume you'll need to use the computer but that isnt too big of a deal if you would get like say a remote control and have the volume buttons trigger the volume control. In my old vehicle's install I put the HU where the ash tray was after some slight modifications to the opening. I was thinking of moving the HU in my jeep to get an indash LCD but decided against that, I have also though of the HU less route, but decided that if the computer ever was to go out on me I would be out of luck for music and well that isn't something I like to do, drive without music.

Nice to see another modder from Minnesota. I'm actually relatively close to the U... I live in Woodbury. I applied to the U of M Twin Cities but applied way too late (I'm talking a day before the deadline) and I wasn't accepted. I got a 27 on my ACTs and have good grades, so I probably would have been accepted had I applied earlier. Alas...

HU in the ashtray area sounds interesting since I'm not a smoker.

Just to keep this on topic... Mount the HU like a CB radio - under the dash next to your knees. Probably be cool.

Woodbury! I'm in Afton - just a couple miles away. Shall we start thinking of another Minnesota Meet? (Let's shoot for some warmer weather this time...)

MN meet sounds fun, how many other posters are there from MN?

I won't have my Carputer installed (maybe not even started ) by then, but I'd still probably go.

EDIT: If I mounted the HU right, that CB idea could look really nice.

There was 4 or 5 of us last time, pretty fun, especially the run away carts hitting peoples cars.

i think the CB idea would be a good one to go with. you could always make a fiberglass console to make it blend in more too

lmfao! haha... runaway carts... once i was with my friends and we were pushing a cart with a Stratus (behind a mall, so no one was in the way....) and the cart was impaled onto one of those cement pillars that come up from the ground about 4 feet.. straight down the center, funny stuff. I've got a polaroid of it around here somewhere...

I was just checking around my glovebox for a prime CB-type mounting location, but it's slanted the whole way... so I need a new idea.
