Basic Stamp Programmers

I am interested in getting into the world of basic stamps, I was just wondering if there are any forums that any one knows of that can help newbies get into it. Any help would be apprecheated, I would like to also know what is needed to start this, thanks in advance

have a look at www.picaxe.co.uk They must be the easiest basic stamp chips to use. you can program them by basic code or use a flow chart which gets converted to the code for you

I can handle the code, just not sure about what hardware I will need, could anyone put me in the right direction?? I am thinking about PIC chips but they seem expensive

http://www.parallax.com/ is where I started. You can look in Yahoo groups too. stampsinclass is the one I look at sometimes. You can ask questions and they don't make you feel dumb. I'm just starting out myself.

It would be cool if one of you can get this to work with a phototransister. We could use it to trigger an event to change a skin for our media players.

Yes, have been researching for the past months and they have units for alot of things including WiFi recievers and transmitters, temperature probes, and i think a phototransister. The list goes on and on and is beyond my knowledge. Just wanted to get started and was looking for some good sources, thanks guys

The PIC chips are much cheaper than stamp module, more choice, much more versatile, smaller size too. The ITPS PIC chip only cost $1-2.

The basicstamp BS1 and BS2 is based on microchip PIC16C56c and will cost you $30-50...you can just buy the PIC16C56 for about $2. If you want more ram then theres always more from microchip.

Why not use a BASIC or C compiler for the PIC. You can download the PIC18 series C compiler from their website. There are few compilers for PIC you can check out such as HITECH C and PICBASIC Pro.

If you can handle the code then stick with assembly language...you can control the little PIC much better than with compilers

If you want to get into the reprogrammable PICs, I suggest skipping the Basic Stamp and going to the BX-24 and its ilk. It's very faster, has more features, and anything you learn with it can be applied to basic stamps too.

I use the BX-24 and the OOPIC, both excellent reprogrammable PICs. The OOPIC has superior servo control, the BX-24 has some better timer functions, etc.
