Car MP3 Costs
Now for a little different question, let us assume there is a high quality near OEM grade MP3/CD car radio with the following functions:
Drop-in replacement for many original equipment audio systems; Automatically detects MP3 CD-ROMs;Over 10 hours of music on one CD; Up to 255 MP3 songs in 255 user defined directories; Supports bit rates of 32kbps-320kbps, including variable bit rate (VBR); Multi-session capable; MACH TracTM allows quick access to any song on the MP3 CD; Supports multi-layer directory structure; Electronic tuning with 6 AM/12 FM station memory; Digital Clock; CD music play; CD changer compatible;Scan and Seek MP3; Shuffle MP3; Repeat MP3; Supports multi-layer directory structure; plays discs in either flat file or directory mode;
Advanced features included Scan/Seek Directory, Repeat Directory, and Shuffle Directory; and more.
Given this, how much would you pay for an in-dash MP3 CD like this?

basically you have an indash cdplayer that plays mp3's on a cd.... they already have those out from aiwa and pioneer. beat those prices and you might have a chance.

Add a connection for a USB or Firewire hard drive and you've got my attention!

Well to me the building of my player is the best part. Where is the fun in buying a pre-made unit? I think its more of challenge to build, find obsticles, overcome these, and triumph building your own, CUSTOMISED player, you can bet that no one else will have an isntallation the same as yours.
You may have different views, but thats my thoughts

Well mp3designer seems to have a problem understanding that most of us if not all our building our own unit for the fun of doing it. Oh well it also looks like he went with the AM/FM radio when he stated that is sucked and was a useless feature when you could listen to MP3 on random mode to get the same thing without commercials. Oh well.

Having a radio in the car isn't a bad idea. Traffic and weather reports and whatnot don't come in mp3 format.

true...but lets be real for one seconds....isn't those damn bloody commercial the reason / boring musics radio stations now awdays play the reasons we all are building our own station (mp3). Personally i stoped listening to radio stations almost 1yr ago unless i am not in my car. Anyway usually when i get stock in traffic, the amount of attention i get from onlooker is beyond imagination. Questions after questions....i should just have a big sticker on my car to explain it all i guess.. Anyway, usually when i get stock in traffic i can keep listening to mp3's or just load up a DVD/Divx.

I am doing this so I don't have to listen to the radio, and I don't have to swap cds every 70 miles.

the radio can come in handy SOME TIMES. A local radio station here in Adelaide, South Australia broadcast the whereabouts of the police radars every 15 minutes. this can be handy!

I say abandon the MP3-on-CD concept. You'll have to compete with Pioneer and Aiwa and there's no way a start-up company would be able to compete.
You're best bet is to create an MP3 headunit with a hard drive. The hard drive could be set up like a CD Changer - a separate unit that goes in the back seat somewhere or in the trunk. Make the HD upgradable and able to connect to our PC's and THEN you'd have a sellable product.

I appreciate your comments!!! Despite the spamming views, many of you don't check out all of the fourms and I want as much real user input as possible. Next, having been a frequent solicitor of your MP3 wishes and ideas, we noted TWO distinct user populations that use MP3. One group is your techno-wizard types who want to build their own solutions. However, a larger MP3 sub-group actually wants an easy-to-use, pre-built and economical way to play MP3 in the car. We are providing products for both groups but really need user and usability data. So what is an in-dash MP3 CD player worth, even if it is pre-built, with the functions described above????
