using NavTech disks and other GPS disks

My dad has some BMW Navtech CD's that work excellently for GPS. My only problem is i'm not sure how i'm going to get them to work. Where can i get more disks? What program do i have to run to use them? I'm a little new to GPS....some help would be awesome.

go to navteq.com and fork the 200 EUR per country.
you can also stop using this proprietary stuff and help us build the next generation mapping infrastructure at http://www.navsys.org

The only problem is that no amount of coding is going to get you map data. Even if you have the best GPS mapping and route planning interface, it will be useless without accurate street segment information. Am I missing something here or is there some secret map repository somewhere (I know about Tiger, but how about the rest of the world)?

yep, you are missing something. It's called "when something doesn't exist, and no-one will start to do it, do it yourself
The NavSys project has as one of it's goals to start a world-wide mapping database that is free to all.
With enough people, we can do that map in a very short time.

Ahhh, my apologies. I didn't realize that NavSys had the capability to generate segment data. So it will eventually have an interface for entering things like house numbers and traffic features like "no left turn, one-way, etc..." as you drive you around and record the data, and a way to merge data from multiple sources? Wow, I didn't realize that scope of this project... If this gains worldwide acceptance, it would be an amazing accomplishment! I hope you succeed...
