carputers stolen?
just wondering.. has anyone had their caputer stolen or had the car broken in to in order to get at it?
just curious.. i would think that with the LCD in the dash that it might make it look tempting to a theif.. but i cant imagine they want are computer parts.. i mean.. mine wont be accessible..
just curious of how much of a problem this is compaired to normal indash head units..

i had my first lilliput screen stolen. they tried to jack the computer too but didn't take it and also didn't break anything. they just yanked the screen and broke my dash panel. it's all good now. i have a custom made security faceplate (read scissors cut cardboard spray painted matte black). heheh

Nope, people think I am a cop, (white crown victoria with limo tint). Also, I have read on other threads some people had their ride broken into. It really sucks that your stuff is gone.

Stealth mode?
Here's my answer to inviting thieves, I hacked away loads of plastic from behind my central air vent and hid the lilliput deep inside. At the moment I am just push fitting the vent when parking, but I have already sourced a nice low geared motor to raise and lower automatically, I just need to find a thin hinging method before I start.
A side benefit of this is that the raised airvent makes a perfect sunshield for the 2 days a year that bright sunlight would be a problem, the ducting behind the monitor is blocked off and the aircon works fine out of the other 2 vents (on the 2 days a year it's needed!)

At the moment I have a quick release Pioneer WD6010 TV screen, which I take with me when I leave the car.
Lilliput will be installed low down in the dash, so should be away from prying eyes.

I leave my police scanner on when i'm not in the vehicle, the constant burst of police chatter acts as a good deterent.
Also the ammo boxes in the back help too..

That's a great idea. It not only implies that you're a cop or have some affiliation to one, but it serves as a reminder to any thief that there are consequences to their actions. Cute.

And also gives them something else to nick instead of your carputer. Diversionary tactics - I like.

I wonder what the effect of a visible camera and a sticker saying their picture has already been sent over the internet would be? Just another thing to pinch?

I hide it in plain site.
This works for me. Plus it protects the screen when its parked indirect sunlight.

hiding everything wont keep criminals out of your car. Sure some go wandering around looking in cars and if they see something they'll try it. But a lot of criminals will just break into the car anyway to find something.
My solution was to get an alarm. I have a shock sensor so it triggers if someone tries anything funny. That and, I have a couple lights in the car that are always on or flashing constantly that can scare them.
As far as hiding everything, use window tint. Better than throwing random junk over your screen.
