Lightbulb Security idea - hide the LCD

The best way to keep your vehicle secure is to make it look as stock as possible...so here's my idea that i'm going to use to hide my lcd...all the rest of my equipment will be hidden anyway.

i have a double-din HU that i'm going to rip out and replace with my LCD. Now my problem is that if some jerk comes and looks in my window, he's gonna see something worth taking.

so my idea is to 'peel' the front of this old HU [look at the pic] off...and place some padding foam on the back [to protect the LCD]. this way i have a facade of sorts...and i could create a hook/latch system to hold it in place while i'm gone.

there are some parts of this idea that suck, like, it's not automatic like this one guy's idea to modify an old cd drive to create a door for the LCD...but it's cheap and within my budget. I don't live in a bad neighborhood, so i can't say that this idea even has a chance in a neighborhood like that - your stuff will get stolen anyway...

anyhow...just thought i'd give a little constructive input....hope you guys like the idea

some modifications to the idea wouldn't hurt either...i know i didn't think of everything

i changed my sig. not the avatar. too many ppl were making comments about it and i was getting heated, so i changed it.

yeah, it is an interesting idea...remodeling a cd drive to open and close to hide the drive....if you read my post, you'd see that's why i came up with this idea, since i have no experience or comprehension of electronics...

i'm still thinking of ideas...your's is sorta flat...[nice fab job though, and it looks like you made the paint match perfecty!]...so hiding that sucker might be a little difficult...i see why you've been thinking about it for a while...

my screen is going to be recessed into the dash...so creating the hook latch system is easy for me...[once again...that's why the idea is only good for me ]

I used a lilliput and bought the rails for a drawer from lowes. Did some work with the Dremel and it fits in a single-din, longways. You reach in, pull it towards you , rotate it 90 degrees, then flip it up. I ought to post a pic of the device. Its put together, and sized, just not in my car yet as I am not ripping apart the console and dash until I have allllll the parts I need (3rd time...).

werd! that's a great, cheap idea. thing is, it could eventually be upgraded to a motorised form!

i'd like to see some pics...

i have a double-din space, so i am going to mount mine in the dash...if i did the single din idea, i wouldn't have anything to do with the rest of the space...

i've also thought of creating a removable screen [you know, with the removable bevel, but i don't want to have to plug it in every time i get into the truck...]

i'm lazy

Someone else built one out of an oooold am/fm cassette double din unit that actually had half a tape sticking out of the cover, both for added realism and an easy handle.

I can understand those that just have a LCD not mounted in the dash being worried about security. Like when it's just kinda mounted with a goose neck or some easily removable housing.

What thief is going to go through the trouble of ripping apart fiberglass/bondo work? After it's all said and done it's not going to be worth much after it's all torn up!? I don't get it? It's also not like there's a huge resale market for LCD thugs.

How many cars get their stock LCDs systems ripped out?

well if they don't want to sell it maybe they just don't like the fact that you have something nice and they don't and they just want to screw it up so that you don't have something nice anymore.................

Hell I get jelous but would NEVER... That would be just WRONG. That would be a sad situation. Goes a lot deeper than greedy, profiting theft.
