Although the article doesn't mention it, isn't this the guy that was also driving at 90 mph?

I basically have a little app to kill WinDVD, Opera, or any apps you want base on the Com port thinggy on other thread. The only problem I have right now is Killing Winamp's VIS and Video. I don't want to close winamp. Just close the Visualization and Video windows.

Is it illegal to have the VIS on while driving?
Sony and other company have them built in and it seems ok with the law?

Hmm seems more and more that I'm looking at a WinXP Embeded solution.
The XP Media Player will play dvd's.

I believe the correct question is - "Is it illegal to have the VIS on a 7" screen while driving"
The sony HU's are tiny and hardly a distraction.

Because it is a moving image most likely it would fall into the same as watching a dvd.

Well, the question isn't so much what the software could do, but rather what it could do by simply pushing buttons or flipping a switch while you're driving your car. If you set up your system to boot to your front end and the front end disable video playback (and productivity applications) while the car is in motion, you should be able to make an argument that you are complying with the (Californian) law. In any case, if you can, at least, show that you made an effort to comply with the law by equipping the system with an interlocking device and software, it might aid your defense against a murder future charge.
Then again, I'm no lawyer and nothing I post (or have posted) should be miscontrued as legal advice. If you have legal questions, consult a qualified licensed attorney.

My system plays MP3 and even though I don't have plans for adding that capability, the porn guy and now this guy are going to get everyone up in arms over in-car DVD and screw it up for everyone. It will be interesting to see which local yocal will take up the cause to ban in-car screens. The idiots always seem to screw over the innovators one way or the other...just my two cents worth...

I don't think they're trying to say that just because he had the ability to watch a DVD, he must have been... His passenger told his ex-wife "I don't remember the accident, I was too spaced out watching the movie"... So they have evidence he was watching it. I don't think they're going after regular mp3car people who aren't idiots.
I'd be surprised if they started trying to ban LCD's... After all, I'm sure the cars the lobbyists 'loan' them have navigation, and they wouldn't want to give THAT up!

Couldn't you just use two hard drives, one loaded with all the data (including OS), except movie programs and files, the other loaded with just the movies and apps? Then you could control power to the second through a relay. Provided the HDs aren't destroyed in an accident, it would be easy to prove you weren't accessing second hard drive.

Whether I am using front end app like FodoPlayer, MediaCar, or whatever, I do want to have control over what application to run and what will be disable. In any case, I will try to prove that I am willing to comply with the law by limitting the capability of my system to just music and navigation while the vehicle is in motion.
Any VB guru wanna help me out with it?
I am able to find the handler for the VIS and Video and when those window visible close it, but I can't get them to close. Try SendMessage with Ctrl + Shift +K for VIS and alt+V for Video, but those don't work.
To close all other apps, SendMessage with WM_CLOSE works well. But not Winamp VIS/Video.
Fodo, can you help me with this?

Maybe they should start addressing those ignorant ****s putting on makeup or yacking on their phones while driving. I was on I696 the other week and passed a woman putting on mascara.... doing 70mph!
And I know everyone on this board has been behind some idiot on a cell phone who was driving like he was receiving oral sex from a rabid beaver.
If the guy was watching a movie instead of driving he deserves the full penalty of the law. But officials should look into more prolific issues pertaining to distracted drivers than trying to get their names into the papers with this guy.

I saw a police driving a van carrying about 6 other officer driving at 70mph. I slowly passed them...to my suprise the pig was eating a sandwich with a drink or something.
My instinc was to give him a dirty look, only if I have a passenger with a camera we would have taken a pic of the bastard and report him.
They talk about safety and ****, look at the example they show us.
