whoa guys... (hosting related)

alright, you all know i'm offering free hosting to whoever needs it.

the problem is, i just recieved an email from my webhost saying i'm at 93% capacity.

Alright.. i have a 500 megabyte capacity, and 10 gigabytes of transfer (bandwidth).

together, fantomas and moremods have used roughly 350 megabytes of capacity, and 2 gigs of transfer. (not that i mind on the transfer end, because i generally use less than 1)

I deleted some relatively unused portions of my site, so i now have about 50 megabytes spare...

I'm not gonna cancel the service. But i do need your guys' help in finding creative ways to deal with this space problem. I know what they're being used for is a service to the community, so i dont mind hosting it...

If no more big files get uploaded, then there wont be any real problem. just lettin ya all know of the current situation.

If I may ask, how much are you spending each month for this? I might be able to get you a better deal with more space.

Maybe you could make a donation page, and people could donate you money, then you could get a little more space.

i dont care about bandwidth. i'm well below a 3rd of it used right now..

besides, pictures are relatively web-optomized. noone's uploading bmp's or tiffs or anything like that. so that accounts for less than 30% of the site bandwidth.

what you could do is recompress all the JPG files to a slightly less high quality. For example if you open images taken from a digital camera in photoshop and re-save them as JPG with "7" or "8" image quality, you will bearly notice a difference in quality, but you will save alot of space (it usually goes from 500KB to 130KB on a BIG image).

Also... ALL movies that you are hosting (if you are hosting any) i guarantee you I can compress down in size alot with nandub smart bitrate control divx.... microsoft's WMV mpeg4 format is inefficient crap and a waste of space.

let me know if you need any help. for one company I did exactly what you are talking about... they paid me and I brought their site from 120MB down to 45MB with some efficient file formats and compressions.

it's not the jpgs and stuff that are the problem.

it's the .exe's and .zips. they are used for skinnings and mp3car specific applications. i suppose i could have them switch everything over to .rar, and that might save me 10% or so space...

i deleted all the movies i was hosting other than viking kitties flash, which i'll host a mirror of till the end of time i also deleted all the soundbytes i had, cause they were outdated, and a few folders of porn i had decided to share. (jordan capri is no longer available on my site... and there was much lamenting).

but like i said, that only freed up about 50 megabytes.

Whoa guys..

Alright, MoreMods didnt see this apparently. he's uploaded 100 megabytes more of stuff.

I've decided to temporarily delete the contents of his file. I have everything backed up on my computer.

Maybe we can reach a better arrangement for disk allocation...

EDIT:

I propose we leave 1 skin on per week. then at the end of that week, take it down and put up another skin....

or maybe if anyone has hosting they can take some of the skins. but i cant host em all.

When i logged in today, i checked site disk space, and i was running at 524 megabytes. that's over my allocated capacity. sorry, but the steps had to be taken.

How much web traffic is the site getting? If it is mainly the downloadable files taking up the space, I have a fairly large file server for my internal network here at my house that I could open up to the world. I have a brand-new and empty 160 gig drive I just put in it. My only concern is the traffic over my connection. My DSL circuit runs at 1600k down and 816k up which is fine if only 10 people are pulling things off it. From the outside world I can usually download things from my home server at the full 100KB per/sec. Is this something anyone would be interested in? I work for my ISP, if I beg enough they may be willing to open my line up to 7Mb down and 4Mb up.

idea

I know this might not be the best method to approach this problem, but what if we used something like bittorrent and everyone who has the specific file can share it. I know a lot of us leave our computers online all day and bitttorrent won't take up many resources. It might be slower depending on the individuals connection, but it might assist with the problem.
