Post MONITOR HELP!

HELP please! I have a working 17" monitor, whose cable has broken pins. The pins on the VGA connector have been bent, and some are missing, and completely gone. IT will not function. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

thanx!!!

well, you could chop the plug off the cable so there is still an inch or so sticking out of the plug......
and then strip back each wire on the plug part of the cable so you can use your multimeter to see what wire goes to what pin, and then solder on a new plug...

That is if the plug is moulded to the cable....

argh!!! and its a 17inch too!!!!!

um this is what I would (two choices)

* get an old ****ty 14inch monitor - chop off the VGA connector for yaself. Then lop off the broken connector but leave a bit of cable on it. Then with the broken plug/cable strip back each of the wires in the loom and then using a multimeter/test light work out which coloured wire goes to which pin. Even though the pins are bent/broken I would hope that a bit of metal pin is still inside the plug moulding that you can make electricial connection with a multimeter probe. With each pin assigned to a coloured wite on the broken plug and written down on paper, repeat the process with the plug/wire you cut off the 14inch monitor.

With all that info you can then solder up the good plug to the monitor cable. Sure it will be messy and a bit fragile at the join, but it saves waiting a 17inch monitor. Also dont use table to insulate each solder join, get some heatshrink tubing instead.

* second method, a bit more dangerous but would be neater. Open up a ****ty monitor and remove the vga cable/plug from where it goes into the monitors PCB. Then do the same with the 17inch. and yer solder the new cable to the PCB. a bit more dangerous with the high voltages in the monitor (possibly) and working with the PCB, you may havto remove circuit boards etc..... so its fiddly.

can't think of any other ideas? anyone else able to give chipmunk a better solution?

Go to radioshack and pick up a new connector. Find the correct pinouts for your monitor, and solder on the new connector.

Just go to Rat Shack with the old connector, and buy the matching one.

You probably won't find them anywhere. You can call the manufacturer, but they don't like talking to non "certified" techs. So the best idea would be just to cut off the old connector, then use your continuity meter like SkinnyBoy said and find out which wire is connected to which pin. Then wire up the new one to match. It's not hard, just very fiddly because of the small spaces involved.

Do not use an old 14" monitor for the plug!
14"ers are missing a few unnecesary pins that 17"es need!
