Convenient mp3 transfers
I have a removable hard drive which I use now to transfer mp3's from my home to my car. However its a real pain, because I have to shutdown my computer, put the drive in, boot, transfer the files, then shutdown again. What is the most convenient setup available for updating the mp3's in my car? I could network, but keep in mind I'm not going to have a full keyboard, mouse, and monitor in my car. Right now I have a 40x4 display with a numberic keypad which works good.

One method off the top of my head... just for something unique... If you have a Floppy drive connected, you could always have a Floppy disk with an alternate autoexec.bat loaded onto it, which would auto-load something like PCAnywhere at boot-up...then load files remotely...
Just another idea for the toolbox :}

There are a lot of options for geting the files there, but it sounds like your most upset with having to reboot. transfering 1 file takes longer then rebooting..... but annyway; I got a handfull -
1. I use a software package called winvnc, its just like pcannywhere, but its FREE ! it has a client and server, and can run (client or server / mix and match) on most any platform. for example you could use your unix box to controle your winnt box.
It even has a client for a palm pilot !
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/winvnc.html
2. Wireless lan ( I use this pluss the above program) I curently have the intell version, but there are many choices, I would recomend 10 Mb if you can afford it.. 1Mb is much cheaper , but really slow. I recomend this product - http://www.techworks.com/products/airstation-lan.html
3. I have a cd-r/w drive on my desktop. when I want to move massive files, I burn a cd ( write once or re-writeable) go to the car, put the cd in, then go inside and use my wireless lan and the above software to drag the files off the cd to the hd.
4. If its the sheer time of rebooting that makes you mad, you can use a flash memory card, they have usb readers you would need 1 reader for your desktop, and one reader for your car ( unless your car or home pc is a lap-top, they have slots built in for reading flash cards) the flash card is recignized by the pc iinstantly as another hard disk, its fast, small, and has no moving parts, but its pretty expensive, and comes in small sizes. On that same level, you could use a pcmcia style hard disk. IBM has one that is 10 Gb.
Hope one of those workes for you

I have an Ethernet jack installed in my gas filler doorr and use VNC. Without TCP/IP set to DHCP, installing the network does not effect boot time.

I use a program called filesync. It works great over a network. The client machine simply needs to be on. I don't have the url off the top of my head, but you should be able to find it on download.com

Hey gizmo, with that winvnc program do you have a boot disc for it? how do you get the program to start if you dont have a keyboard and monitor in the car?
This program looks like it rocks! And i can use it from my mac (my main cd ripping comp) to control it! Just curious how fast is a normal lan line?
Ive never actually used a lan before but well my mac came with it built in and so did my mobo i bought for the car so why not use it. This would be great for small touchups the system seems to need every few weeks... like new plugins etc.

Nyconx :
Well, I do have a keyboard and mouse , and monitor in the car, but sometimes I like to work on it from inside.... pluse the home pc is eaiser to read than the lcd.
annyway, I load the program on boot.
I put it in the start up group of my car system. It only adds like half a second to the startup time.
I load a ton of crapp on boot.....
I have PCMCIA services running on a desktop
2 USB devices, 1 kbd/mouse 1 network
winamp w/ plugins
anda bunch of crapp for my video card
I could clean it up a lot, and probably bring it down around 1 min, but It dosnt bother me enough to mess with it.
Someone mentioned before.....
use tcp/ip, no netbeui or ipx.
specifie an ip, do not use dhcp.
load vnc in the startup group, and you dont need a boot disk.
and a note on the cable -
You mentioned you have 2 computers, no hub.
If you are going to connect the 2 computers with no hub, you need to use a crossover cable, pin's 1.2. swapp with 3.6.
That probably dosent make sence, so get a hub, or go to the computer store, and get a crossover cable.

Aaron... as corny as it looks the functionality of your hook up seems great!
gizmo, sounds like a nice setup i would have a hub if it would work out for me too do this. You mentioned that you would burn a cd if you had a large amount of files transfered. How fast is a network with a hub between two systems? Although i really should set up a network anyway just for the minor upgrades and the occasional new mp3. (you can use that program to upload stuff not just work with the files your system has right?)
I think im gonna start pricing out hubs. im guessing length of cable doesnt matter much (around 50 feet) I really have to look into this. I mean i always planned on doing somthing like this but the time i guess has come... im getting sick of taking system out to upgrade it.

Pricing for hubs? There isnt even really a point anymore. Hubs are VERY cheap now adays you can get a 5 port hub for around $15 now. That or you can just get a cheaper kit with cable, nics, hub for a good price. If you want to buy them seperatley I found an online store that sold me 100 foot of cable for around $5 (it may be less but it was a while ago). Networking these days is cheap. Good luck!
