Is your car computer insured?

Just doing my duty as an insurance agent....You may want to check with your insurance company to see if you need a special endorsement to cover your system. I've heard some companies will cover it (although I've never seen proof of that). Other companies add an endorsement on to your policy for a specific amount of coverage. In my agency we list it under the non-factory Stereo/electronic device endorsement. Doesn't cost too much. Might be worth the time to call your agent/company and ask.

Just wanted to bring this up. Would hate to see one of us lose our system and not have any coverage on it.

When I got my RV insured I made sure to get $5k personal property coverage. Def a good idea to make sure everything is covered!

Well Batman, as an agent, what is your companies policy on this ???
and will they cover FULL replacement ???

(edit) oooops, missed that line in the post....
Do they cover 100% replacement or " fair market value " of something that has NO market established value... ???
Can receipts be presented at coverage time for a value assigned for replacement ???

Batman, you said it doesn't cost too much. What in your opinion is not much? After a year would I be able to replace my machine with the money I would save by not having the insurance?

Just wanted to say - make sure your system is worth the extra insurance money. You don't want full coverage on a beater, if it'll cost you more in insurance than the car is worth.

I've thought about getting my system insured, but didn't think they would do it for a fair price. Anyone actually have insurance on their systems? How does it work?

that's cool man. Is Guide One also like your insurance carrier, or is it something you were just able to get through them?

I haven't insured mine, as I thought that I would have to pay the excess on each item I have an invoice for (i.e. MB, HDD, Screen) thus meaning I wouldn't save much. I also wasn't sure what proof I needed to supply of what it actually is. I now have an article to send them in a magazine that describes it better but can you tell me if I am wrong about the excess per item thing?

I am completely covered, however my policy stipulates that i have to have all equipment mounted in some form. I.E. My sub box is screwed to the car, so are the amps.

Geico covers my stereo and carputer - it is based on receipts - but does not cover "install" time - so If I have someone install something - like a HU and it gets stolen, they only replace the HU - not the labor to reinstall.

Sorry, forgot to look back at this post. With our endorsement the system is covered to a predetermined value. (ie....mine is covered for $1,500). It will be replaced up to that amount. Receipts are the best, and pictures, website documentation, etc... I actually showed mine to our local fraud investigator just so she couldn't argue with me later if something happened.

Best to check with your agent and company, as all are different.

SnyperBob,

Here in Ohio, I have mine covered for $1,500 and the six month additional cost is $37.50 per six months. Of course other variables apply like driving record, other discounts, etc.... Our exact verbage is below:

POLICY COVERAGES
EXTENDED THEFT - STEREO/CB RADIO/ ANTENNAS/ETC.

Covers direct and accidental losses to stereo and sound transmission or receiving equipment and accessories subject to the provisions of the policy. The comprehensive coverage deductible does not apply. Refer to your state manual for specific rules and limitations.

stevieg,

Here in the US (specifically Ohio) it is just a grand total of what you've got. If you know you are going to make additions in the near future, I would just include them in the total value you insure. Check with the insurance laws and regulations in your country first.
