should 1ghz / 260MB be enough to run video?
I got the via 800 or something mobo, i forget which one. Anyway, its 1ghz and i got 260MB ram. But I converted my simpsons episodes into DIVX format, but when I go to play them, the sound runs and normal speed, but the picture is slow.
I tried running some smaller video files that are like 10-20 seconds in length and those run fine.
Do i need for RAM?

If it is an Epia 800, then it is an 800 mhz machine. Even the new M10000 1 gig machines can't play most DIVX encoded movies with the newer higher compression. the newer M series have more horsepower even at the same clock speed as the original Epia. I have the ME6000, and it blows away (okay, its all relative) the Epia 800 I played around with that made me realize I needed a more current M series board (but wish I could have waited for the SP).

DivX always lagged on older VIAs. I got a 733.... So its not going in to my project for that reason, laggy video.

Bangster is right. If you have V series it won't help you as it uses SDRAM. All M use DDR which is why they outperforms. I play everything on my ME6000 including DVDs with no more than 60% load.

I can run dvd and divx 5 (windows media player classic) on my Compaq Presario 4840. It was a 266Mhz PIII 192MB running Windows 95b. I don't know why a 700Mhz couldn't.

I have a Pentium 1000 with 256mb ram and the built in intel 715 video chip. Divx and Xvid work just fine. Maybe faster disk drives? Do you have a ton software running in the backgroud (spyware, viruses, other crap you don't need...)?

I have an EPIA 800 in a VCR that I use for all my movies and stuff. DivX I have no problem with. Some XviD movies I do have a bit of lag though. But My DivX and 3ivX movies work great. I have 256mb ram runnin XP pro with sp2. Back when I had ME on it, all my movies worked just fine. What OS you running?

If your running XP that could be on of the reasons, XP uses alot of resources.

yah im running xp pro. but i cant install sp2. i try and i get the blue screen of death and it says dumping physical memeory. So im thinking I need more memory to just install sp2 on it.
Like I said, i can play uncompressed avi's and such, but anything divx is slow.

Bluescreen on SP2 install isn't because you need more memory. SP2 still requires the same amount of ram as XP without any service packs. Sounds like you may have a bigger problem there.
