Then you would be sitting there for 35 to 60 seconds waiting for it to boot, hoping it doesn't crash when you stick your thumb on the glass, or the kid with the plastic toy out of the cereal box can't circumvent it.

I was actually thinking of something like that, i've used biometric time clocks which work pretty fast. I have been thinking about tearing one apart and see what I can build out of it.

exactly
you can get a biometric door lock (like deadbolt thing used on houses)
they cant draw much current, so what if you gave it a dedicated line and somehow worked it into the ignition
and you could put a manual override like hidden in the back somewhere
hell it could replace key ignition all together
for gods sake think of the possability's!

yah, there have been a couple of threads on this in the past. Most people eliminate the idea because if we're talking about a way to get into the car, there's too much power draw (usually.) Or, as already pointed out, you're sitting there waiting for Ur pooter to boot

pimp... there is no pc involved
i'v seen these dead bolt systems for like office buildings
they just screw to the door and use batteries
so if you took one apart and gave it a dedicated line
im guessing you could use it for some kind if ignition thing
(or other stuff)

I don't know about that... Even very expensive fingerprint scanners have been shown to be able to be spoofed with very simple techniques. On the other hand probably no thief would know about it, but if you're going for security by obscurity, I can think of easier/quicker tricks.
No denying it would be cool though, especially if it replaced the key altogether

Any ignition lockout can be bypassed, many alarms have them. They just reduce your risk of theft, Not eliminate.

reminds me of one episode of Reno 911! They setup a baited car to be stolen but only put one shotglass full of gas in it... then turn away from the car to talk into the camera while the thieves drive onto a trailer.
Any security feature can be defeated, whether you want the car enough to try is the limiting factor.

I like to keep my car sounding/looking crappy enough nobody would want to steal it other than out of pure sickness...
The more gadgets you put on your car to keep people out, the more they want to see/steal what ya got.
