Just Venting
Well it started off as a nice 4 day weekend finally some sun,, just bought a 3Gb hard drive off ebay and the guy lived near me,,, cool picked it up
brought it home was working fine,, all day in between meals formatting,, installing.. decided to go xp since i feel its always booted up faster than my 2000 pro. Installed sp1.... codecs, front end frodo, MC many others......... it was a little sluggish being 4200 RPM but just before i was about to put it all back together
i realized,, this version of XP does NOT Have hibernate.......... i didnt know that was possible but apparently it is
b4 i pulled the pc out today on the 120GB i had i was using 2000 pro with hibernate,,, time saving is amazing,, i couldnt live with cold boot everytime
i guess ill be reformatting,, and going back to 2000 all night...
just one of those wasted days,,,, i thought id share with everyone
BTW- i got a 3Gb Laptop drive for the OS and proggies,, everything else will be on the 120GB 3.5 in which i converted to USB so it would be much easier to update frequently, JIC you were wondering,, " is he really going to use just a 3GB hard drive?¿?"

Wouldn't it be funny if you just didn't know to go into Power Options and enable hibernation?

What are you talking about? XP has hibernate. You to hold shift when you are on the shutdown screen and stand by will turn into hibernate.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think your motherboard has to support it. I don't know any version of XP that doesn't have hibernate.
I came across this while trying to find you an answer:
If your system doesn't want to Hibernate, check your Windows folder for a file named nohiber.txt. This file will contain information why Windows won't operate Hibernate.
In most cases, a suggestion will be offered as to how to proceed and be able to use hibernate.

no i just used this new drive for xp,, i was using a 3.5" 120GB with 2000 and was able to hibernate,, im pretty sure mobo doesnt matter,, i thought it was all software... could be wrong
but as for this version not hibernating,,,, its apparent to me its not supported as the original pc this xp version is installed on doesnt support it either,, i just went and checked,, i guess i should of done that before i installed. I just figured all versions supported it. It would seem it would be as simple as adding files....changing registry...ect ... but no one even knew it wasnt supported in some instances
i browsed through some boards but no luck

What version do you have?
Found this on Technet:
"Hibernation is enabled by default. All ACPI-compatible and most APM-compatible computers can be set to enter hibernation.
Because the contents of the computer's memory are written to disk when the computer enters hibernation, you must have at least as much available disk space as you have memory.
To disable hibernation
In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.
Click the Hibernate tab.
Clear the Enable hibernate support check box.
Note
You must have the proper hardware to use hibernation. If the Hibernate tab is not available, the computer does not support hibernation."
Like I said, your hardware has to support it. My guess is that you don't have a ACPI-compliant BIOS.

i just honestly dont want to install this version of 2000 pro i have,, i got it about 4 years ago from my fathers work and on every machine i have used it on booted so slow... the slowest OS i have ever had boot. Its also currently installed on my p4 2.8Ghz 512 DDr with im guessing around 2 minutes,, if not more. Never really timed it but i know i dread turning it off as i dont want to wait for it to boot the next time i start it up.

Think you might have to get use to the idea. As I stated in post #8, you have to have a ACPI BIOS, basicly motherboard. If I recall it is enabled when you install XP and the only way to enable it is when you install it, you can't add it later. It seems that I ran into this problem once before and had to re-install XP.
Try this right click My Computer/properties/hardware/device manager. Top should be "Computer", expanded it, it should say "ACPI uniprocessor PC". If it's not check your BIOS to see if you can enable it.

wow,, the time you just saved me
it was the VGA driver,, how freakin weird,, i would have never guessed
how did you figure that out when it happened to you?
thx again to everyone.. timmy,, im glad it was this simple,, i was worried when i read on M$ some "versions" dont support it,, figured i was SOL
i hope i can get decent hibernation times,, with this 4200RMP i am booting with SP1 installed at about 56 secs,, which is the same i was getting with my WD 7200RPM

well I'm a newbie, so please don't flame me if i get this wrong...
anyway, could it be the fact that it's only a 3 gig hhd? as it need just over 1gig to hibernate, it would seem very tight, I'm not saying it's impossible, but something worth investigating as nothing else has worked.
