I can offer to help with making the howto from the articles as well. But I won't be able to help for a couple of weeks. Semester is ending, alot of work is due and finals are about to start. But after finals week I'll be glad to help. Let me know if you guys need the help.

bah!
oh that.. yes well..

IMHO that number should be user configurable --and be labeled 'latest xNumber'.

and yeah, by transcribing.. I was rather thinking of turning into articles, FAQs, HOW-TOs, etc

Why not just add a Wiki to the current site? This would give the benefit of letting "us" create the new MP3Car.com website one page at a time.

There will NEVER be a WIKI.

Yeah, why so absolute? I've seen two very strong reactions to the suggestion. I don't particularly care whether we have a wiki or not, but some type of improved knowlege management process would be ideal. A wiki on power systems for cars would be pretty good after a fashion. One on something less popular would probably not be as good and might have outright wrong information in it. Kind of like some of the posts

i'm a bit late in this convo, but my 2 cents:
  • I would use GeekLog over the other cookie cutter php web portals. it has the least security flaws and bugs out of them all. unforunately, vbulletin is not one of the forum's it supports. I know it does phpBB and others, and i know there are plenty of conversion tools for the data from these boards to other board systems
  • usually Wiki's do not turn out as planned. it is best to have a structured how-to that is approved by mods/admins
  • I also have PHP/MySQL experience. I help run a site called Texas Mafia that runs on PHPbb, and then the flash portal and front page were custom scripted by myself and then modified by the other admin, Kev-Nuu, for the eyecandy (I've been admin/mods on several boards in the past since the good old dial up BBS days :-P )
  • I agree about having 1-3 pictures attached to your username, then pay $5 or so every month to have your pictures and car site hosted (which can be a simple template altered by a user's CSS choices) at one time this was a free service from Mp3car.com, and then it went away. this would be a *large* tracker for users like CarDomain and such are doing.
  • A file download area would be a nice addition, but make it a bittorrent to save some bandwidth costs as a suggestion
  • I agree @ the RSS feeds...i do that for all of my news. maybe have a few admins or some random script that highlight's a user's setup for that day from their profile? or maybe use the RSS feeds for top news topics that affect our CarPCs and such that links to the forums?

This site has mucho potential and knowledge. its only a matter of organizing it in a better manner to be more useful. however, that takes time, energy, and admins/mods to do it right.

I second the RSS feed! It would be pretty cool to kludge together some kind of app that would get the feed via the wireless card when I start up in the morning, then read it to me as I drove to and from work. A far superior use of a 30 minute dead time each way!

Exactly what I was thinking.
