Exhaust System Advice

I need advice from some trusted forum friends...

I want to replace the stock exhaust on my 04 Canyon. It's a 3.5 Liter inline 5-cylender. I'd like to get dual coming striaght out the back. I talked to a local shop that was recomended by a friend. I was told $350 installed for a flowmaster and dual striaght out the back. $55 each for tips.

All mandrel bent pipes and all steel.

Should I be cautious for anything else?

Mandrel bent pipes are the key thing I would look for in a performance exhuast. The pipes should atleast be aluminized steel, stainless would be best but would most likely double the cost. Also if you wait a little longer Flowmaster might come out with a pre-made system for those trucks. I got a pre-made system for my 97 Ram back in 98 and it only cost like $200, with dual rear exits. Summit Racing has real good prices on Flowmaster systems.

Oh, well, you can never go wrong with Remus exhausts.

5 cylinder engines have been around awhile, and are pretty good. Did I think I would see a new one made? Nope.

Good packaging, I don't know any thing technical about it like natural balance, if it has a goofy exhaust note like a v-10, or anything like that, but I know the turbo diesel straight 5 in my sisters old Audi 5000 couldn't be killed with a direct nuclear blast.

I haven't tried out a new truck with that engine, or read up on why they went with the I5.

My bad, just never heard about this before... but still, Remus make, I think, the best exhausts.

FoxBat - I have a little larger GM engine (the 5.3L V8) but you might want to do some checking as to how the dual will effect performance. At least with the 5.3 V8s GM makes you will LOSE lower end power with the dual exhaust. That can be overcome with some other mods, but by removing some of the backpressure you actually get a dip in the power curve at lower RPMs. Don't know if this is the same with the 5 cyln you have or not.

I think there are a couple Colorado/Canyon forums that might be able to answer those with some dyno curves. Many I know want the sound more than the power and will add an air intake system to help provide and get the power back. Again you are looking at $300 to do that (but it does actually help at least with the V8s)

$350 + tips is not a bad price for that setup. Just be aware that your stock GM engine is tuned to the stock exhaust, you might have to adjust either with another mod (intake) or an ECM tuner.

After a call to flowmaster, I was told to wait for a new flowmaster product or give up the exhaust. They told me they have never put a flowmaster on an I-5 before but the old(er) I6s give off a not-so-cool buzz.

Magnaflow has a soundbite up on their site of one of their mufflers on a Colorado (which is the same truck).

I'll get a new air filter. But I'm looking at an AIRAID intake system too.

I don't care that much if it's loud (though I don't want a crappy sound) I just like the look of duals comming straight out the back.
