in the world of alarms (as with most anything honnestly) if you try and take a drastic shortcut and take the cheap way out, you will regret it.
There is a difference in quality when it comes to alarms. That's no different than any other electronics out there. Not only the hardware but the wiring as well.
Do yourself a favor and either don't get a remote start or get one that's worth a damn. Simple as that.

If you're looking only for keyless and remote start Target has a pretty good one for about $50. Comes with instructional video too and it's very easy to install. I bought one a few years back for a 96 Probe manual, installed in a few hours. I believe the one's they sell are made by DesignTech. It's range was actually better than the 2 Viper/DEI systems I have now that cost $300-400.

I highly recommend Crimestopper. I have a RS900FM. It has a VERY long range (I've started it in a movie theater, in the back of a huge store, etc) and it also has 2 way so it lets you know if it's started. This is huge for me because if you don't know if it's started or not what's the point of having one..
I had the one in my truck installed because that was before I did a ton of mods to my truck. I got my wife one for our anniversary ($110 off ebay) and installed it myself. It works great.
I just put an older Crimestopper RS900 in my brother's truck last week and I'm installing two RS900VII's in the coming weeks. It's really not that hard to install them as long as you take your time.
The RS900FM is discontinued and the newer RS999TW1 is supposed to be problematic.. I would try and find someone who still carries the RS900FM and then install it yourself.
FYI: When I got this for my truck it was around $400 installed but I bought it on the internet for $100 and paid $150 for the install.

Can someone explain how its possible to do a remote start on a manual vehicle? I thought the clutch would have to be in.

No, when you put a remote start on a vehicle, it bypasses that switch since you are sending power directly to the ignition coils and starter. When you start with the key, power does not go to those components if the clutch is not pushed in.

So the clutch is more of a safety device incase you have it in gear when using a key? What if your car is in gear and you try starting it with one of these keyless systems? Do they have safeties in place to not allow you to start remotely?
Also, whats a good online store for alot of this stuff?

No, you have to leave it out of gear and tap into the clutch sensor thingy. Someone explained it to me a while back but I dont remember all the details. You also have to have a sensor of some sort on the shifter to detect if the car is in gear. If it's in gear it will disable the remote start. Most shops won't do remote start on a manual car because if something is wrong and the car starts in gear, they can easily be sued.

With a Manual vehicle, if the remote start allows being used, there is a procedure that you need to do when you exit the vehicle to "arm" the remote start to be possible. If you open up a door between setting it up and attempting to remote start, it is disabled.
1) put on park brake
2) put vehicle in neuatral
3) start engine
4) press autostart button on fob
5) stop engine
6) close door
7) lock door with fob
THEN you can autostart it up to the point a door is opened. Those might not be all the steps, and it is probably different for different manufactures, but in researching alarms, I saw those steps frequently.
I Ended up with a Prestige (aps786) remote start/keyless entry/alarm. I wanted and will probably get a two way AutoPage brand soon for my Grand Marquis, and put the Prestige in the Cougar (which was the original reason I got the setup, but things changed between buying it and getting time to install it).

DO NOT BUY a Clarion Ungo...What is supposed to have a lifetime warranty does not. I am on my 4th...yes that is right, 4th MS2007(all warranty replacements...Clarion refuses to honor my warranty any more). I had it professionally installed, and I also had another installer check it out. The alarms are junk and tend to break at the strangest times. Once I tried to start it remotely and the car started, turned off, started, etc. Clarion replaced it and it worked for a couple months. Two months later I was driving down the highway and my locks started locking and unlocking and the smell of burnt electronics filled my cabin. Clarion refuses to replace the alarm, even though they recently came out with the ms2107 and the features are almost identical. I have talked to several installers and they all told me the woes of the ms2007 as well. STAY AWAY!

I had an Ungo in my RX7 about 2 years ago, when I owned it. :P I also agree that ungo is CRAP! Although mine was not remote start, I had the same problem with doors locking and unlocking randomly and the alarm would go nuts whenever it felt like it. Bad products. Don't buy Ungo. Luckily I sold the car and the alarm went with it. :P

This one 2 posts up by me.

I learn how to install alarm/remote starter when the shop didn't want to do it for me because they just don't install remote starter on Standar/Manual transmission. I just F them and do it myself. I just put 2 switch, by the shifter to disable the remote starter if the shifter is in gear.
I never have a single problem when remote start the car. If the shifter is in any gear the car won't start. Here is how I wire that switch.
From hand brake or ebrake switch which is Ground connect to 2 NC momentary lever switch in series then go to the remote start module Ground. At the same time this ground also wire to a relay to the clutch bypass switch. If no ground, the module is dead. If for some reason, the module still work, there is no power to switch on the relay and thus the clutch safety switch will not bypass. Double safety.
There is a clutch safety switch by the clutch pedal. It's basically a pin switch. You press the clutch, 2 wire connect thus enable the starter selenoid. A Remote Starter active out wire can be use with a relay to bypass the switch.

Is this your method or this instruction included with the each alarm?

That is my method.... the alarm/remote start module instruction has a warning of not installing on standard/manual transmission car.
Since I want remote start and my car is manual. That is what I come up with ...

Just got a Valet 562t (starter & locks only) from Ult. Elec. Primarily because of the $200 price and next day install. I tried a Crimestopper diy before and ended up destroying a starter - thing kicked in at 60mph on a freeway! But, that was my own fault.
Ult. Elec. was very good about the install. Only 1 wire through the firewall. And the engine monitor was in a place I would never have thought to try - the #1 injector! They even left me the install manual and trunk popper (aka computer starter) at my request!
The sales people were morons - they said I needed a bypass thingamagig for $35 and another $35 for the install - even though I don't have the chipped keys. That didn't fly with the installers and they let me know that before they installed the starter!
Overall a good install. Okay range, but I've only investigated the range a couple times, so that's still up in the air.
Just thought it would be releveant to this thread...
