My alarm is made by Prime (AST), which since changed to
UltraStart . These alarm work really well. I installed some noname one that a co-worker bought off Ebay for $100, and it works fairly well, but the install manual sucked compared to mine. He also didn't get several features mine had. Another co-worker had one installed by Best Buy. It's a Codealarm, and it's junk. It falses all the time, and the remote doesn't always work. He got hosed for almost $500 on something I would have installed for him for $50. The installers did such a bad job on it. They left the alarm brain almost hanging, right under the drivers side dash. Just one tie-wrap holding it in. You didn't even have to look hard to see it. Any idiot thief would find it in 2 seconds.
As for my Prime/AST/UltraStart alarm, when I bought it (from a friend) it was for a manual trans. car, so as was said above, to get it to start, you had to (while it was running) pull the E-brake, tap the brake pedal, then turn off and remove your key. The engine stays running until you close your door, then it shuts off. Obviously, that makes certain you didn't leave it in gear. The alarm wiring had provision for the clutch bypass and whatnot.
My car is an auto, so I ended up switching the alarm with an auto one since the procedure was just a pain in the a$$.
I'd recommend the UltraStart alarms to anyone. The range is quite good, the remotes are nice looking. Though, they're kinda fragile. I suppose they all are. I dropped mine a couple of times and one of the crystals inside broke off the circuit board, so I had to pull it apart and re-solder it. Then I used some hot glue to keep it from happening again.
Anyway, that's just my opinion yadda yadda yadda...
