keyless entry + remote start recommendation
I'm looking for a keyless entry/remote start unit for my car,
Something on the cheaper end but still of good quality.
Anybody have experiences with these units or can give me a recommendation?

Realiability goes to DEI for just about any unit they sell. If you want something worth spending your money on, then go with a 2-way Responder Sytem. Like the Viper 791xV of Clifford Matrix 3.5 equivilent.
Another good unit is the Copusa 2WSS, great range.
THough, this units an go above the 400$ mark for a quality install if you are looking to get it installed.

I second the DEI nomination. I strayed 1 time and realized the mistake about 2 hours into the install. DEI is the only way to go for me from now on.

I back up that DEI is your best option. I have remote start, and just about every other option on my GTi. I have used CrimeGuard and Clifford on my previous cars. DEI is the only way to go. Oh, and the two way system is nice and all, but it's very.....how to put this.....not needed?
Yeah, it's got a two way function, so it will let you know when the alarm has been tripped, but the range on it isn't that good. We were in a hotel with a friend who installs for a living and he had that on his truck. He couldn't even get a reading from inside the hotel (we were on the second floor facing the truck, not that far from where we parked). It won't reach while you are in the mall, in you place of work (most likely), etc....
If you think it would be worth the extra money, then go for it. Just keep in mind that the remote uses batteries a hell of a lot faster than a regular remote. They have gotten better for that remote, but it still uses the batteries rather quickly.

little bit off topic, but does a DEI alarm have to be installed "professionally" to be able to purchase one? I remember that the Clifford alarms used to be that way (maybe they still are), but I live in Australia and want to get a decent alarm and I don't think I want to pay for an installer to have a holiday at my expense .

DEI makes some that are self-install. Clifford and Viper aren't self-install, but the others have the same exact features just different looking plastic on the controls. My Clifford is like one of the vipers except its got this gay fake carbon fibre.

I can vouch for the DEI stuff as well. I have the Viper 791XP or something like that installed in my truck. It's the 2 way responder remote start system. Kick ***.
Edit: Plus with DEI if you get it installed at a DEI retailer you get LIFETIME parts and labor warranty.

Lucky! I wanted that alarm But i'd probably be through 2 remotes already, I drop my keys alot, and it would be really annoying in class with it vibrating

i have a 791xv also. they are extremely nice. the twoway is good basically just cause it tells you when you turned your car on. that way you can turn it off from keyeless igntion too. i dont know how the oneway systems work, but i assum that they either only let you turn it on. If it lets you turn it off too, then you might have some problem pushing it 5 times cause it didnt have range and like turning it on and off and on and off... i dunno though...
my advice: get a 791.

Yea, I drop my keys all the time too. But the remote comes with a belt clip. I just clip it on my pants next to my cell phone holster. Works great! I had another alarm and the brain unit died. Never again will I buy anything but DEI. Lifetime warranty was the seller for me. I have had it for almost a year and not one problem to date.

The one way system works exactly the same as the 2 way only the range is shorter and the car will not notify you if the alarm goes off or when the car is started. I got the 2 way system mostly for the 1/4 mile range it gives me. You can still turn your car on and off with the one way systems, you just won't know if you actually turned it on or not. 2 way is killer.

How much did u pay for yours? I ended up paying $450 for the ******* alarm. And it doesn't even have remote start (but has glass break and trunk and hood sensors).

Remember though, lifetime warranty is only for the brain, remotes & sirens only carry a 1 year warranty.
P.S. I can sell & install anything DEI but clifford & viper, also some of Omega (excalibur, k9) for anyone in Balto, MD, just PM.

I forgot to mention I was a professional installer for a couple of years. We mainly sold DEI but also some Ungo and the cheaper models. The range is the same for the 2 way and 1 way systems. Both are 1/4 mile. The 2 way just notifies you.

http://www.sbhcorp.com/scripts/homeViewItem-1223.html You could have gotten it for $219 and installed it yourself. Anybody with half a brain can do it. Any geek should be able to figure it out easily. I taught myself before I started at the stereo shop I worked at.
Edit: I am getting my wife the 561T for Xmas so she can use her factory remote to start her Chrysler 300 I bought her for her birthday. They are easy to put in as well. You just get input from the factory keyless tnhat tells the car to start. I hate extra keyfobs. She is never really that far away from her car when she is inside and the range is actually really good on her remote.

An alarm is only as good as its installer. Plus I had a broken stock alarm. I do wish I knew someone who could install them here in SoCal. Al&Eds autosound, were we got our previous 2 alarms is soo ******* expensive
