I've never run mirc - I've heard that it's full of security holes. Is this true? Are they easily patchable?

Security holes.... Let me see, they CAN get your IP Address, but imho thats no big deal, just get a good security program such as zonealarm (www.zonealarm.com) or Blackice Defender (www.blackice.com)

I agree for the most part, but i had zone alarm, and it completely messed up my LAN to the point where i couldnt access other computers

Hey, ZoneAlarm doesn't work well with LANs that are primary used on networks not connected to the internet. Also, if someone hacks you from your inside LAN, you can go right up to them and smack them upside the head. ^_^
