xbox mods, a new question
Is the entire xbox OS...dash... stored on the motherboard? Is there a need for the hard drive at all?

to my knowledge, a large piece of required data is stored on the actual motherboard, but the actual dashboard is on the hard-drive. could be wrong though.
ya need the hard drive though. every single game uses it to cache data.

He's right. The dashboard (among other data: settings, cache) is stored on the harddrive.
What was your plan?

Well I'm thinking of getting a mod chip and throwing Linux on a IDE flashdrive to replace the hard drive. Then setting up a SW RAID array of USB thumb drives with my mp3s on them.
but if games cache data to the drive, it would be writting alot to the flash and i don't want to kill the flash by over-writting.

hmm
depending on how many thumbdrives you plan to use wouldn't it just be cheaper to go with a cf card? then you could go with an ide adapter and replace the hdd that way. and depending on how much money and data you have you should get one of those hitachi drives rated to -20*C

I bet it would work, just be really slow... I don't plan on burning games to the Flash drive....
I'm looking at a new job now... with a 4-fold pay increase so I may be building an uber-carputer soon.
