I second that.
I got into a crash last year, got T-Boned pretty hard and although the car lost power (engine cut off) the computer kept on running and playing whatever mp3 i was listening to. I got hit pretty damn hard too, both of my back seats folded down and almost everything in my trunk (minus the speaker box and computer) ended up in the front seat.

So the computer or HDD is my last worry in the event i get hit.

I don't think thats a good idea

I had a car crash where i hit an oil patch spun 3 360's hit a concreate curb then slide across the other side of the road onto 4 lanes of oncoming traffic.

What happened? nothing bad i just had to get new wheels and some wheel bearings (cost over $2000 all up when there wasn't a scratch on the car)

But when my wheels hit the curb the fuel cutoff switch triggered.

Now if yu have this type of accident which is possible or some type where it triggers the fuel cutoff switch then you will be calling 911 for no reason at all.

I think you should maybe have a timmer like 30secs after the sensor has been triggered you get a choice of saying yes or no for the call to 911.

Also if the accident happens you should maybe have a voice recording to tell them that you'r had a car accident then send them GPS info then using D3 or something else sending them the street name the suburb/city and maybe the number

I still don't like the idea of it being auto calling 911

id go theough the airbag system if it wasnt for accidentally triggering them. the fuel cutoff switch just seems to be a bit safer imho.

A couple months ago I got into a head-on collision while in my ram 1500 and totalled it. I had a full size computer in the front seat that i was transporting, luckily I put the seat belt on it. The cop said I saved the computers life. Weird thing about it was that i was taking it home to work on a problem the comp was having. But the error I was getting in the bios was "Load RAM crash", so this kinda freaked me out.

ANYWAY: What is kinda unique about my carputer install is that I am putting the computer inside of a 1/10th scale model of my car. It is going to sit behind the back seats on the shelf. I am almost done with it. I'll try to attach a photo. I think I am going to add some blue underglo lights to the model. Needless to say its a tight fit, but it looks cool.

Sorry for the bad quality image. I just took it real quick with my phone. Maybe i'll take some with my digi later.

here is a cool project that someone on the corvette forum is working on:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...post1549775370

he is integrating his radar detector in the stock HUD display. These displays are getting pretty cheap used and new now. i'm sure some of you can hack into it and create your own hud. maybe with the HUD, a vfd and centrafuse (lcd/obd-ii support) you'll be on your way!

i guess the coolest thing im trying to do now is get the mazda rx-8 navigation controls to communicate with the computer somehow. only bad thing is they use some kinda databus which i need to decode. then i figure ill hack it to a USB joypad and run joystick to mouse software

you should look at the ipac2 keyboard emulator. I'm using it now and it is very configurable.

also check out LabView software. it may help you with decoding the databus.

I want to replace my speedo gauge with an LCD. Something like 2.9" screen instead of it that would show the speedometer and also were to turn next (a la VW Paeton). But this is just an idea

i think that would be a coll idea 0l33l. just allows for so much customization beyond a simple speedo. of course, DO make sure to have some kind of backup just in case. you never know whats going to go wrong
