you should build a car pc because it's a hobby... so there shouldn't be a choice to be made.

i am a big fan of eclipse, if you dont want something you can tinker with go with that. if you want a new (and expensive hobby)...go the car pc route.

Eclipse has another version with gps navigation, but no hard drive. It's cool cause it has a dvd drive as well as a regular cd drive (leave the nav cd in while changing out your audio cd's with out having to go to the trunk). I really want to build my own car puter tho, and can do it for a lot less cost. I just recently got a new Mitsubishi Outlander that has the double din opening, and I just happened to be doing some research on a couple different Alpine head units til I build my carputer and ran across the eclipse decks.

That is sweet! I bet people can hack all the stuff that it doesn't have into it. Adding OBDII/GPS is probably easy if you can hack the OS. It's probably linux based - because it certainly isn't Micro$oft.

I think it looks pretty sweet... I just wonder about how hackable it is.

That's the selling point for me.
