We must go to the same school then
But yeh, that's why I threw the IS300 into the mix

Jokes aside, I've owned Japanese, several American(Chevy _and_ Ford), and German cars. Of them, I've been most impressed with the engineering and thoughtfulness of the German cars. I am by no means saying that I'll only buy German though. I'd much rather have a "perfect car" for my price range regardless of the Country/Make/Model.
I'll look at the GS/IS's. One of my good friends has an IS (the SUV, I think it's the IS) and I absolutely love it. I'm not sure if it's in my price range though. When I said 30-40k range, I meant between 30 and 40 _period.
I want all the bells and whistles, _except_ for the Factory Nav. system. I'm not going to pay $2500 quid for something I already have.
If the dealer is lucky, I'll buy a housing for $100 so I can hack it.
Make sure to test drive the car before you buy it. My friend tried so many cars before he baught his Solara. He originally wanted a Mazda6, but when he test drove it, he said it was **** with a crappy interior. He went to look at the G6 for some reason and when he saw the car in person he didn't even want to test drive it. He said something bad about the steering in the 3-series (I'd disagree, the cars should handle great). But he was restricted to under $25000 for his first car.
I'd say that the avalon would fiit your price range nicely, but its FWD (but I'm throwing it in the mix because you drive a VW).

The Avalon is a nice car, I used to drive one. However it's more of a passengers car than a drivers car. Everyone that has ever sat in the backseat of my car has commented on the leg room. I looked into the numbers myself and it actually has more room than the new S class mercedes.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a FWD car unless you are in the snow states. Or is the avalon AWD? But yeh, the avalon is full of technology like rain sensing windshield wipers, etc...

Range Rover = $58,730 (trade-in) $61,148 (private party) $65,340 (dealership) for a 04. That's TWICE what he's willing to pay. Plus its made by BMW

Nope it isnt made by BMW no... read up buddy... its made by LAND ROVER, which at one point was owned by bmw, but now is owned by ford...
The current Range Rover (although it might be expensive, I didnt search that, no) has BMW design influences, many you might argue, but it is still probably the best SUV around...
ol33l: I respect most of your postings, but you really must accept into your brain that Lexus isnt the only good car around... please dont be so biased it puts other comments you make less trusty...
Nothing against you personally bro... just try and keep personal opinons on a second level...

I never said that Lexus is the best. I just said that the Range Rover is out of his budget, and so are the Lexus SUVs.
BTW: I'm still right about Range Rover.
"The all-new '03 Range Rover HSE was co-engineered with BMW prior to Ford's purchase of Land Rover... A new 4.4-liter/282-horse V-8 shared with the BMW X5"

Yeh. But'd argue that "it is still probably the best SUV around".... it has a 2/5 Overall rating from j.d. power If the best SUV gets a 2/5, then I'd hate to see what a crap SUV gets.

Between the 2, I will get the VW. Like you said, it has more option compare to the Bimmer. And like other said, you want the Bimmer just because it has the IBus.
I am somewhat anti-SUV also. That doesn't mean that I won't drive a SUV. If you do off-road alot (several times a year), hell yeah get a SUV. But if your driving is 99% in city, don't waste money on gas.
As for the argument between which car is better that is still a big ?.
I will buy Toyota/Lexus because I always own Toyota and keep them for 7+ years. The reliability make me keep them that long.
I will buy a Bimmer cuz it is more fun to drive and such(german engineer, cutting edge technology????), but I won't keep them for more than 3 or 4 years cuz it is NOT as reliable as the Lexus and it cost more for maintainance works. Just don't flame on this.

Oh yeah, king of off road, the Hummer.
The next inline: Land Rover and Land Cruiser. These are the only I saw on Discovery Channel, National Geo people use to cross the Sahara, Australia Outback, and the Artic Circle.

JD Power? They give some type of an award to every vehicle on the planet. Don't you remember, "2004 Award for best Ford Focus", "Best Initial Quality in a BMW 3 series", etc.
If you want to place any kind of faith in a review, go out and review the vehicle yourself. It is the only way to evaluate how well a vehicle suits you and your needs.
And a crap SUV gets a teenage girl to high school and back.
