Post NEW mp3 format!! Half the size, better quality

Click here for the full article
"MP3 Pro's creators, France's Thomson Multimedia and Germany's Fraunhofer Institute, claim the new format requires half the disk space needed to encode the previous generation of MP3 files. Alternatively, it will double the sound quality at the same file size - essentially a 128Kbps MP3 Pro file will take up as much storage space as a 64Kbps MP3 track" - Tweak3d.net

This new format will likely require a more powerful system to decode won't it? Maybe I finally have an excuse to get rid of the pile I have now.

A better compression system will require a faster machine.

Worse, this is being released by Fraunhofer, the same people who have the patents on the mp3 format. They go around suing anyone who writes mp3 playing/making software who doesn't pay them royalties.

For this reason I'd avoid using anything they create in the future. There are other better *free* *open* standards like Ogg/Vorbis.

And like most other s/w, I'm sure it'll take'em a few versions to get it right. ;-)

they have relaesed the code for all free mp3 coders eg. winamp but if you were going to charge ppl for usin your mp3 software you would have to pay them for the code which makes sense.

cant wait for a decoder/player to be released if it hasnt allready!

It doesn't matter if usage of the mp3pro stuff for players is free. That's just bait to lure you into their trap.

If someone wants to write their own mp3pro encoder, why should they have to pay Fraunhofer? What if Charles wanted to build-in mp3 playing into Cobra IV instead of having it run Winamp? He couldn't do it without paying, even though it's a free project he makes no money from!

Don't fall for the bait.

mp3pro.com has an evaluation RCA Player/Encoder and some links to some mp3pro encoded tunes.

It seems like the mp3pro files play in normal winamp but I guess its only half the quality then when it's played with an mp3pro player?

All I know is there 2 mb songs and they sound pretty good.
