Heat!!!!!!!!

Been running a bookpc since Nov. with no problems. The past couple days it has been in the 90's and I'm seeing a problem I think is heat related. The player boots up and plays for about 10 or 15 minutes and then locks up. If I shutdown and wait a little while it will bootup and play again. Anyone running a bookpc seeing the same problem. I have a 533 Celery in it. Would dropping back to my 233 cut down on the heat? I could put another fan in but it would be a tight fit if I could get it in at all.

Im kind of running into heat problems also. Heres what ive done to combat future problems.

1.) added an extra fan
2.) improved circulation
3.) bought a winshield shade from Pep Boys (this is supposed to reduce overall car temp up to 50 deg., and i almost believe it!)
4.) Cracked the window when possible.
5.) Park in the shade whenever possible

Other things that might help.

- Run cpu idle software (i cant think of any off the top of my head)
- Get some thermal paste for the cpu (Arctic Siver is the best stuff, but expensive...this will help provide a better contact between the cpu and fan which improves cooling)

Im sure theres some more things you can think of, and im sure the rest of the board can help also.

Yep, i had the same problem the otherday and i knew what it was....HEAT!!!! So i turned on the extra fan i added in January. So far box is working fine. I will wait til sunday to c if this solves my problem. Nice thing is that i can cut this fan off durring winter or what not....

I'll have to bring the box in and see if I can get another fan to fit. Maybe add some holes for better air flow. Not many choices with the bookpc case though. Heat buildup is not a problem, most of the time the upper doors are off when parked unless it's raining and it is under the seat so it should be shaded all the time. I guess I had to give something for the small size (which means small fans)

I have a book PC as well, and I have noticed that the fan output is a bit warm lately (80s to high 90s here). It hasn't crashed or locked though, and not warm enough to be a concern. It has a custom power supply as well. You could change out the PS fan for something with more CFM. Or add some more air inlet holes, there aren't many at all in my case.

1. get a fan trace out side and mark holes for drilling.
2. cut whole and drill outer holes.
3. place fan on inside of case screw in with self tappin screws.
4. also get a grill to go over top to protect fingers and other foriegn objects getting cut up.
5. wire fan up to spot on mother board 5v or get an adapter to use hdd power use still get to use it for hdd as well.

also, try underclocking the processor...

or...watercooling!!

i havent tried it on my pc yet, but ive heard of people who have pcs in their homes who use it and it decreases temps by 2-8 degrees.

LOL Watercooling for a car player?? Most people try to keep the size of the case down to a minimum.

another thing you can do that will help cool the pc is using thermal paste on the cpu. in case you dont know what thermal paste does, it sits between the cpu and the heatsink and it transfers heat better. the stuff most people use is called Arctic Silver (1, 2 or 3). Their web site is here. Most people notice a few degree drop in temperature.

Radio Shack carries generic paste too. "Thermal Compound" or something of the like.

What about a bigger heatsink?

yes, a bigger heatsink is always better if you can fit it in your case.

A note about heatsink compound: You only need a very small ammount. A common mistake is to use the whole tube on the CPU and heatsink. You just need a paper-thin layer to get the best results.

a bigger/better heatsink and fan would be my first upgrade for the pc to lower the case temps. the 2nd best way is to add an additional fan or improve air circulation. these other suggestions like thermal paste and idle programs are just finishing touches.

My backplane is open and there is a floor vent right behind it. If my system overheats, I crank the A/C and watch the temperature drop
