Google Satellite is a pretty cool site, for more data and better resolution imagery (at least around my place) go to http://seamless.usgs.gov. You can zoom into the full resolution of the imagery plus get road names and other geographic data.

That **** is crazy... do you guys think there are geo-stationary satellites that can take high-res imagery? I mean, I think the gov could have them if they wanted. The most difficult aspect for me to fathom would be image stabilization... just rambling...

They're not geostationary, they're on various orbital tracks to cover lots of ground. Though I'm guessing some of the "satellite" photos are from aerial photos...

Oh, and there is at least one commercial provider of satellite photography: http://www.spaceimaging.com/

There are lots of commercial imagery providers. The US companies are often funded partially through the US government who has rights to all the imagery and decides which can be sold and at what resolutions. They also have the right to completely block sales over certain areas (such as current war zones) whenever they feel like it. Kinda the same deal as introducing an error in the GPS signal (obviously not the military one) over combat zones.
