Canadians: Second rate citizens.

I recently completed an install, version 2.0 1800xp-256ddr-60gbmaxtor-radeon, only to have invertor buzzing.. which would not go away (I tried everything you can think of, even different inverters.. it didnt even have to be connected to the audio system, just having its presence in the electrical system caused it... as well, my subwoofer kept erasing the harddrive.. so the system had to be relocated into the cab... and at any rate, the system had to be redone.

I decided to go DC2DC with M1-ATX-Tualeron1300-256ddr-120gbseagate-FlexATX-Radeon, I searched high and low for the perfect motherboard.. and found it.. I tried desperatly to find a canadian vendor with a similar board.. but to no avail... I even purchased one on ebay that was the correct form factor.. but with a chipset that did not support the tualatin core processor I had purchased... so, I figured.. hey! I'll ship it to an american drop shipper (lots of places do this) and just go pick it up in vermont... triumph at last! Well, that would have worked fine, except new egg will not accept payment, since they do not allow me to enter a canadian address for the billing address (my credit card)... and if I enter an american address, say of the drop shipper, it also tells me to get lost.. that it is not the billing address of my card.

You americans are lucky when it comes to purchasing online.. now I'm stuck, with 3/4s of the parts I need to complete my system, and no way to get the final parts.

C'est la vie. :P

Well, if you're a canadian citizen, then you're not a US citizen (unless you have dual-citizenship). So how can you be a second-rate citizen if you aren't a US citizen?

I wasn't being literal, its just that in general being canadian, especially in hardware/online/purchasing situations, we're like second rate american citizens... don't get me wrong, I love my country, and love living here.. just, everytime I pay 25$ brokerage fees, plus duty on a 50$ item.. or can't even get something I need.. I feel like im being **** on.. just a little bit. :P

An american company refusing to accept canadian credit cards, which are based on the same companies and systems as american cards, simply because the address is not compatible with their html forms has nothing to do with socialism.

It really depends on what the item is. If you look hard enough you will find U.S. vendors willing to sell to us Canadians.

Half of my sound stage and half of my carputer is from the U.S.

The U.S. companies really want your business, the service is EXCELLENT, no problems with returns and less cost, more choice, and no pushy sales people.

Even with duty/exchange and taxes most of my purchases cost about half that what it would cost if purchased in Canada.

The thing that drives me nuts, some manufactures will not honor warranties if purchased in the US.

So that's the bright side of Capitalism. But usually what I hear from non-US citizens is how cruel and awful it is.

It's a tradeoff. You got Socialized health care, we got lower prices. We need it because we got 45 million people with no insurance!

I'm sure the transaction fees are designed to cover excise taxes and related charges associated with exporting to Canada. Now, we could just drop all the trade barriers and make it one giant North American free trade area including free labor mobility. Your prices would fall precipitously and it would likely involve citizens of Alabama manufacturing all of your goods and services followed by the Chinese and Indians.

Are you up for it?

Sometimes you catch a break bringing stuff into Canada, like that eBay dealer who wrote on the customs declaration that it was a warranty return. No GST, no duty.

If MP3 playback only is useful, you might want to drop into a Future Shop store and take a look at the Omnifi DMP1; they're blowing them out at $150, Canadian, which is less than they're fetching on eBay; I got one today; I was mostly looking for MP3 playback and this gizmo will satisfy that with its 20gig removable USB drive, separate LCD display with controls.
