Lane changing cams...
Question for all you mp3car gurus! How hard would it be to implement two cameras, sitting inside the car, pointed at blinds spots to make the video from these camera's pop up when you are changing lanes? For example, if I had 2 usb web cams and mounted them in my rear shelf deck, pointed outwards covering the blind spots on my car and then when I turn the right blinker on, the passenger side blind spot web cam video is popped up on the screen? I don't think it would be too hard but my concern is the speed of the system. When you're traveling on the highway and changing lanes, the actual lane change lasts, what like 5-10 secs? Do you think this will be enough time for a PC to load the video from a webcam meanwhile still playing other functions (i.e. mp3 player, dvd, xm radio etc)? What do you guys think?
P.S.
I'm currently running an M1k w/ 256MB, 60GB, USB2.0 DVD-ROM and XM Direct unit using the XM cable hack, all controlled with an ATI Remote wonder.

This must be a very fast PC...why dont you do it semi-automatic, with RCA cams and a relay switch, to switch between VGA and Composite in your screen? Would be imediate!

would suck if ur pc froze for a second and you didnt know it and delayed the video as i came up on you doing 120 when you tried to switch lanes

Good point...I was thinking about using the computer to do this via usb webcams because a nice interface could be created to display the video in but all that doesn't matter if its not fast enough!

That's what side-view mirrors are for....
There are times where the implementation of technology doesn't make for a better solution... This is one of those times.

Ok maybe I wasn't clear enough with my original post. I would not use this as my ONLY means of rear/side view but instead as an added tool to help show the BLIND SPOTS which I know, on my car, do not get picked up my rear/side view mirrors unless I reposition myself so that my face is practically kissing the windshield (ok maybe not that bad but you get the point ). It's not like I would get rid of my side view mirrors or anything.

Yes it would be fast enough, my reverse camera comes up in about half a second you would have to write you own software though to keep the webcam code loaded ready for action though.

am i missing the point of the human ability to turn their head.
To be able to trust the system i would have to have it running on a dedicated computer.

The relay and AV input is the best solution. If you could get it to show the camera onm the isde you indicate it would be better. If you have a Xenarc maybe you can do it by using a relay to provide power to the camera on the side you are moving to. this should switch the xenarc onto that AV input.
If you have another make of screen then maybe you could use one of those little boxes with VGA passthrough and RCA inputs to enable RCA and svideo on a VGA monitor.

Unless I misunderstood how you implementing this, i'm not sure its a good idea to activate the "blind spot" camera using the indicators. Because normally if you indicate other drivers assume your going to move straight away or atleast quickly. Not sure how they teach you concepts for driving in the US (probably the same), but its the whole Mirror, Signal, Manouvere thing.
And anyone going past at high speeds may slam their brakes to try and avoid you. It might be a better idea to have a seperate switch from these cameras.

oh yea of course i wouldnt just throw my signals on to indicate all the time.
but it would have it parralleled in with a selector override box somewhere in the center console
i wouldnt want to drive for a mile or two with my left signal on becaouse the chick in the car next to me wasnt wearing any panties or something"
