New CDs won't play on Computers?
I remember that I asked about this a long time ago, but being that I am at my boyfriends parents house and they only have dial-up (connected at a blistering 28.8 right now), I don't have the time or patients to search for the thread, otherwise I would.
The past 3 CDs that I've bought will not play on anything other than a regular CD player. When I put them into my home PC or my car PC the only thing I can get to is the lame multimedia BS that all the bands are putting on their cds now. "The Making of ............. Video!" Or band member bios, etc. I can't ever get the MUSIC to play, which is the reason I bought the damn CD in the first place, not for the extras, I just want the damn MUSIC!
I've tried the following:
A) Add the folder/drive/cd
B) Go to the CD and tell it to autoplay (that just brings up the multimedia stuff, not the music)
C) Go to the CD and tell it to just play, nothing happens
D) Explore the CD and I can't find any music files, just data files (flash, etc for the damn multimedia crap)
E) Try playing on winamp and windows media player
If I can't play these damn cds on a computer I'm going to write these bands a nasty email.
I understand trying to prevent piracy, but what about those people (like me) who buy the cd out right, and want to listen to it at work on their computer? who want to then rip it to MP3 and put it on their MP3 player? or who want to listen to it on their car PC? Who owns JUST a cd player anymore? lol
The car is just about the only place that I can think of where most people would still have JUST a cd player, most people are using their computers for their home stero now...so these bands are saying then that they don't want you to listen to their music anywhere BUT the car?
I'm sure there's a way around it, I just haven't found it yet....anyone care to share the secret?

Hold down the SHIFT key when you put the CD in so it won't autoplay it.

****.
It sounds like a mixed mode CD. You may need to use some other app to read them.
One opetion would be to use Nero (or something similar) to read all the contents of the CD, then make a copy of only the audio tracks and/or rip them to MP3 (or WMA or OGG or whatever your preferred music file format is).
It's also possible that the CDROM drive int eh computer you're using is incapable of reading the mixed-mode CDs, especially if it's an older unit.

when I get home I'll try using Nero since I have it on the home computer.
The drive in the car isn't all that old. It's a Teac slim-slot.
I'll also try iTunes and see if it will let me see the tracks, then rip them in ACC format.....or something along those lines....
already getting the nasty email in my mind ready to send out to these bands....
I have gotten away from file sharing to get the music just out of principle and figured I would support the bands that I think deserve it, but if they are going to do crap like this, then I'll go back to file sharing to get the music and they won't get a dime from me.....

I've got to agree. There's so many other ways to distribute the additional crap about a band with the internet being so prevolant.
Of course you could get an angry band like Biohazard distributing a virus in their 'about the band video'.
Wouldn't THAT be funny?

This explains why the music business as we know it won't survive. When your strategy for battling piracy consists of suing your customers and rendering the media you distribute it on inoperable, well, you can see where it's headed.
For purchasing and paying for your music, Red, you get the gold star. I purchase my music, not because I like record companies, but because even though I think they're greedy bastards, that doesn't make it okay for me to take their product without paying for it. It's ethically wrong and I'd no more stuff a CD from a record store under my shirt and walk out with it than I would steal it by pushing a key.
However, in this case, you have already paid for the music. I'd have no compunctions about exercising my right to fair use in order to covert it to the format you need to listen to it.

Post the names of the CDs so others know. Also, some of us might be familiar with the specific situation and be able to suggest a solution.
Why am I the first person suggesting this?

It's almost easier to just get the music from online at this point... legal or illegal....

There was a lot of kerfuffle about this a few years ago.
Look on the CDs and the CD boxes for the CD logo. If it is on there then the disc should play on any device showing the CD logo - that is the law.
There were a number of record companies who made discs (i wont call them CDs) that could not be played on computer CD-rom drives to prevent them being ripped however several companies - especially Phillips (as they were one of the companies who set out the CD standard) - threatened to sue any company displaying the CD logo on a disc that could not be read on any device showking the CD logo. One of the discs at the time was Shakira's Laundry Service. that disc was promptly re-made and can now be read on a computer CD drive. It was agaisnt the CD standard (orange book i think) for them to do this and claim it was a CD.
The stupid thing is if someone really wants to rip a Cd all they have to do is play it in a CD player with digital out into their sounblaster front panel optical connection and capture the song that way. Fromt hen on they also had to put warnings on the discs saying it could not be played in computer CD-rom drives and they were not allowed to put the CD logo on the discs or cases.

ok - so I moved the spiderbait cd to another drive and now Nero can see it.....but it won't let me do anything with the music files.....any ideas?
Like when I select just one song and move it over to the compilation area it tells me:
Quote:
File/Folder cannot be accessed from specified path:
E:\Track01.cda
any ideas?
and, when under iTunes, I don't have the option to convert those tracks to ACC but I can atleast listen to them
????

Just use an Audio Grabber.
personally, I rip all my CDs and put them back in their cases on a shelf when I get them. I've never had a CD that EAC couldn't handle.
