Post Impreza audio setup 6x9 vs 6"

I have found 6x9s do not fit in the rear shelf of the Subaru Impreza. They only take 6.5" speakers but I could get some spacers to fit 6x9s in although people say dont bother.

Im asking will I get the same power from 6.5" speakers as 6x9s im thinking obviously not so what should I do for a good audio setup in my car?

Note: I want all pioneer...

cheers!

I say don't bother. I had the same delema in the rear of my civic coupe. I tried 6x9's and 6.5's and there was hardly a difference. I actually liked the 6.5's better.

Hmmm 6x9's should have been banded! How can you get clean even sound from an oval shaped speaker cone? I mean where is the linearity in that? I personally hate them, go with a good pair of 6.5" coaxials or tri's. They sound far nicer and the cone doesn't flex in a strange way like with 6x9's.

They were originally intended for use before subs came along, to give a little better bottom end response because of the surface area, but they are the crummiest sound, and reserved for people who just want a loud (is it really distorting!?!?) stereo to blow their mates away.

You want clean linear sound, throw in 6.5" all round (front and rear), and compensate it with a 10" or so sub. That's what I did in my wrx.

If you aren't gonna use a sub, then you *shudder* could use 6x9's, but it depends how clean you want your tunes..... some people don't care, others do....

Your choice... my opinion.

Thanks for the help bj. So do you recommend putting 6.5" both front and rear? I was going to put 6" splits in the front but perhaps I shouldnt ?

Also do you know of a good 6.5" pioneer speaker you can recommend?

thanks!

6.5 all the way. You wont see 6x9s in any pro audio cars.

I should add I would definately shove spilts in the front, just keep the cone sizes equal for the best sound.....ie 6.5" in the rear and 6.5" splits in the front. Mine were DD drive Alpine babies, with the tweeters flush moutned in the top of the front doors. (top right hand corner of door skin.) And that was a really nice sounding setup.

I just got a Liberty, so I'm going to have to do this stereo now

Definately go with a good set of 6.5 coaxials in the back deck and either the same thing up front or speperates....but I do have one question...why do you only want Pioneer? Before you make a brand decision you should really go listen to different speakers. If you got too caught up in brand loyalty you can end up hurting your sound...

hey.... one bit of advice... the best $$$ spent on car... (after headunit is a sub). for legacys/libertys, and most subarus in general.... go for a sub and amp. u can get ok one for $500NZ (no idea how much that is ur $) and it makes the standard speakers sound so much better

since 6X9's are oval, they have more surface area. that means they can move more air and are capable of more bass. But the oval shap is not as strong and will distort at a quieter volume than the 6's, causing blown speakers. 6's will be able to play louder, but with not as much bass. if you have subs, the loss of bass is not a factor though

Take it from someone with 6x9 speakers at the back. I have 3 Subaru SVXes and they run 6" at the front and 6x9 at the back. After some thinking, I ran 6"s all around and they sound a hell of a lot better than 6x9 and trust me, the inside of the SVX is very well balanced. Probably most balanced subaru/FHI vehicle ever made.

whats bass response like????

hmmm. i had a mazda astina, wif 6x9 in back parcel tray.
AWESOME bass... bout as good as my mates 12" sub.
anyway, same speakers in a renault (sedan), = crappy sound.
moral of the story..... just as much to do with the enclosure
behind it (e.g boot etc) as the speaker shape

Bass is better with 6x9 but the sound is cleaner with 6s all around. The car with 6x9s sounds as good as other SVXes with subs in there. But I have polk speakers. Not the best but better than factory paper cones.

Composite 6.5" ???? You're using LCD screens as speakers? I think you meant 6.5" coaxal speakers.
