remote start on manual

Hello peeps. I want to put a remote start on my car which is a manual and would do it on my own but I had my alarm installed by a reputable shop here on LI. I have lifetime warranty on parts and labor as long as I do nothing to it without it being them. They wont add a remote start even though my car has a neutral saftey trigger wire(just like any new car I would imagine). I recently heard that in NY they changed the law and made it legal to install remote starts on such cars as mine if they had the neutral safety wire. Does anyone know if this is true? Know of where I could find out? Would this be something the DMV knows or something? I wanna find out before I go to the shop and start spewing **** that I dont know what I'm talkin about and wind up lookin like a retard. Thanks

The shop will not do it for you for 1 simple reason: liability.
For the law, it could be true but who know if you have it in your car. But if you have accident (jumping car) that cause by remote starter, Insurance may or maynot cover the damage. You may double check with DVM or local/state police/trooper to see whether it is legal or not. There are some remote starter (with/without alarm) that design for manual trans. To use it you have to follow several step before you get out the car so that you can remote start next time.
I installed it in my Supra and never have any problem with jumping because I put 2 extra switches by the shifter (front and back) to detect wether the shifter is in gear or neutral. The car doesn't have neutral signal but clutch signal which I bypass by the remote starter output signal and relay.

yeah, my car has the neutral safety trigger which wont allow the car to start in gear and is what need to be tapped into when installing remote start. It's a green pink wire. But thats not really the case here. Just wondering if the law was uplifted here in NY. Guess I will go to the DMV or a police headquarters. Anyone else know for sure?

It's more to the point of what MatrixPC said. Most shops (especially large ones) won't install remote starts on stickshifts due to liability. That doesn't mean they don't know how to do it, however. I've had a remote start on my Vibe (6-speed) since January of last year, and no problems.

I honestly don't know if it's a law in NY or not, but as said, who's going to give you a ticket for it?

I used to work for Circuit City down here near Atlanta, and on occaision, me and the other guys would do an 'on the side' job in a case like this. Typically we'd charge anywhere from $100-$150 (not including parts) to put it in, depending on what vehicle and how hard it is. Mazda's, I believe, aren't too hard. You could possibly go around to some of the shops and ask the guys on the side.. Unless they're all lazy bums and don't really care, which happens a lot..

yeah, I thought about the "on the side job" idea but if they wont do it and maintain my lifetime warranty on parts/labor than I might as well just do it myself and save the extra $$. thanks guys. I'll ask the dmv/police and see

the only thing i can say to you if youre gonna do it yourself: make sure you read up and know what you are doing. i can only start to tell you of the people that come in to our shop for us to fix their mistakes. and most people that do an "on the side" job give you little, if any, warranty. once you cut any wire on the alarm the warranty from the shop is gone.

The only advice I can give is to make sure you not only use the neutral safety but the e-brake signal as well. The remote start should only engage if e-brake on and in neutral. Just added protection.

Well, I actually use the E-brake wire for the Remote starter ground. If the E-brake is not engage, no ground to he module and thus can't start. Beside that the 2 switch I installed next to the shifter is a NC momentary switch wired in serries with the E-brake.
You have to plan how the remote starter work with the existing alarm. Better study the alarm module regarding to sensors and pin switches (doors/trunk/hood) and how he remote start module bypass those sensor.

If you ever want to know about a law anywhere i find it effective to call 911 (being serious..) and say "no emergency, i have a question regarding a motor vehicle law can you please give me a number which can further inform me" or something similiar. I've found a lot of things out that way like what radar bands the police in my city use. police typically have to give you information regarding how they inforce laws due to the freedom of information act. I've found that's there no reliable internet law search anywhere, maybe someone else has found one?

Hello, I'm a newbie to car pc topics, but remote starts I do know well. You guys are making remote starts for manuals WAY too complicated. About 5 years ago, I put a remote start on my manual 98 Integra GSR. I found the product on eBay for 60 bucks. Just search Ultrastart. Any product number with an M at the end means it's made for manuals. They have great support for new installers as well. After making all the required connections, you're good to go. (For the Integra, I didn't need any bypass module or added security bypass relay) Here's the beauty of it. As I am pulling into a parking spot, of course I had my foot on the brake to stop the car - step 1. Step 2 - pull the e-brake. Most of us do these steps naturally so it's not a hassle. Step 3 - turn "off" of the car and take out the keys. The engine keeps running! You MUST be in neutral for this to work otherwise you simply can't get out of the car! Next - get out and as soon as the door closes the engine shuts off and your car is ready to be remote started. It's THAT simple. :-)
