25 lost hacks
Few days ago i went to post office pick up a packet... it turned out to be huge sack, like dwarf bodybag or something... i started to feel sick, imagined that some of my foreign Xs send a dead cat or something. But to my relief it turned out to be CARPC Hacks by Damien "Velcro Mac" Stolarz, it seems they have weird way to send books in UK.
I just finished the book and surprisingly it seems that some hacks are missing. book only comes with 75 hacks, instead all other of my O'reilly hacks series book come with 100 hacks. Instead of going to yell at o'reilly and demanding 25% of my investment back i desided ask to what MP3car community feels should helong to those 25 missing hacks.
This forum is for those hacks. Format of giving hack is:
#[number of earlier hack]++ [NAME]
[some notes on hack if name doesnt tell it all]
Now we r not writing a book here, that is left for guys at o'reilly and other publishers. but im just interested to know what r those issues u hope that would have been included in the book. Please only hacks (missing in book) until we hit hundred (if we ever do)... after that debate reviews and general conversation is welcome.

#76 Tablet as car pc
-This is what i use, i think could have included in book.
-things like dashmounting, including cooler mounts and ball joints should have been discussed.
- mobility, pen interface.

I'm not sure if a Tablet would be a carpc hack.... at all...
I use a tablet pc as my main computer, but wouldnt think of it in the car...
The screen glare is proabbly worse than a xenarc or just the same on any tablet...
official "Tablet PCs" (microsoft tablet os, and hardware requirements) work only with active digitizers, so they require a pen.... no touching with the finger - a pain in the arse to fumble around for the pen when I want to mute my computer.
No way of building into dash
Usually subpar sound (requires external usb soundard)
etc
etc
just my opinion though...

TBH I thought it was very complete... I was not aware the was a set standard for the number of hacks in a book..... rather I just take it on its individule merit.

This is only the FIRST edition of the book. For the most part this is a pretty market. As long as there are people like us around....there will also be something to add on.

Who decided XP Tablet Edition was/is the "OFFICIAL TABLET PC"
And what wrong with building 'on' dash as opposed to 'into'; actually I've seen two inthe dash and I'm designing one for thru the dash.
The best part of using it is 1 Tablet for 3 cars

I said it was my opinion........
Microsoft launched the "new wave" of tablets with hardware manufacturers in september 2002 (actually official date as nov7th if I recall, but I was lucky to get one a week before- the first model launched as a convertible the acer tm104).... anyways, they launched the OS, software support for it, and gave it their "requirements" (active digitizer, etc)....
I think it doesnt look good on-dash, as opposed to in-dash... (my xenarc is currently on-dash, but I'm waiting for my dash piece to come in so it will be in-dash)... anyways, it is just my opinion, I also dont consider it a "hack" and this is the solereason for me posting here... otherwise we could get 3 hacks: Laptop on Car = 1hack, Tablet in Car = 1hack, Desktop+inverter=1hack, etc... I dont consider these the "hacks", but that is just me (I didnt read this book or any other on the subject)
I just tend to prefer something more definitve, I'm not after taking the system from one car to another atm,...

PS: in reply to my first paragraph, that isnt to say that one couldnt use another OS, like linux, etc, but app support is much more evolved for the MS stuff imo... When someone says Tablet I immediately link it to Tablet XP, and the hardware that comes currently bundled with it... I have seen some old-school tablets on e-bay, but nothing that comes close in terms of hardware... I also imagine that most of those tablets would have a bit of trouble running our apps (they are mostly 600mgz range transmetas, with 128mb ram and stuff)

Good points about tablets u both. I wasn't saying if its especially good/bad solution, just that should have been included (just works well for me, cause of two cars and its pretty dark where i live so sun rays are not first of consedirations ) Also i find book on avarage my liking, so my point is not flam it just raise discussion.
#77 HUDs (mayby even DIY type)
- Most boring part of the book was installing monitors everywhere it was veeeeery repeative.
- I would personally have welcomed some discussion about windshield projection.
- Even if there havent been instructions how to build one (which i thing i encountered though in net) there could have been intro to subject.
- Mayby combined with eyetracking
