Infill T3 Carputer
Last weekend 29-30 Oct at the Brisbane Auto Salon (in Australia, of course :P) (a big car show for those who don't know :P)
There was a new in-car computer system unveiled. The new Infill T3 from http://www.maxice.com.au/
From my first impressions and the website it looks very good, it has all the features we (well I) have wanted in a carputer. It even has AM radio, which is one reason I have been putting off a carputer, becuase even though i hardly ever use it, I don't want to loose features, the point I see in going to carputer is to gain features not loose them.
It takes a double din, but it is seperable so the two din slots don't have to be right beside each other.
Apparently it will be priced at around AU$4500, which I feel isn't too bad considering it looks like normally car audio equipment, you don't have to "hack" your car to fit it, and it has AM radio, which I haven't seen in any "home-made" carputers yet.
Any comments about it?

Yeah, I sort of thought the same thing regarding price, (I'm a computer computer technician, so i could build a killer computer for that price). I'm of two minds regarding the price, one its very expensive for a low spec computer but two its not too bad considering Alpine, Pioneer, etc DVD headunits are close to AU$3000 (which i consider overpriced anyway but stil :P)
The problem areas I see in building one myself are:
- AM radio (I rarely use the radio at all, let alone AM, but part of moving to computer is to gain features not loose features)
- Motorised pop out screen touchscreen, (these are do-able but hard to source i think?)
- Making it look like standard audio equipment. This is important to me, as I don't want it to look dodgy, but I don't want to have it so integrated that it can't be transfered to another car, or needs hacking of my car (messing with resale value)
The double din setup isn't that important to me as i can easily mount the computer either in the boot or under the see where my original stacker was. Though I need to use a pop out screen (motorised is much prefered), as my double din slot is down too low and is right in front of the gear stick so i'd have to take my eyes right off the road for a considerable time to look at where to press whereas my single din slot is just bellow the top of the dash level so i don't have to look down much at all.
The other good thing about that other system is that it had a built-in amp and also RCA pre-outs.
Is all that accomplisable with a home made carputer?

Yep, all is accomplishable...
many soundcards have high enough outs to be considered pra-outs, you could surely get a crappy small amp and shove it in a case like they did, etc...
you can accomplish everything and perhaps more with a home carputer (gps dead reckoning, builtin wifi, cell support, ipod support, etc)
check this for more discussion on the unit: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=54502

We met with infill at Sema. There is no such thing as an "authorized" reseller or distributor anywhere in the world. They told us that anyone who represented themselves as an authorized reseller had questionable integrity.
We had someone from India send us a sample of this 3 months ago under an NDA.

It was not ready for main stream market. We need to test this before we add it to the store so we don't end up with another "lilitput motorized" situation on our hands.

Those of you who did see it at SEMA ( I was there too) what did you think. That seems like a lot of $, I asked and they told me it would retail for about $3500 stateside. I had some questions they couldnt answer, but one thing that REALLY stood out to me was the claimed 3 sec boot time. I'm new to the carputer thing (reading a lot of posts and bought Geek My Ride) but how is that accomplished?

I saw this at SEMA too. Did not get to talk to any of the people at the booth since my boss was making me move on since we are a performance shop and don't deal with these types of items. Nice clean looking unit. I had a problem focusing just on it due to the girls in the surrounding booths too
