3.5 to 2.5 adapter

Hey Guys,

Im doing a little project (not car related this time) but i wondered if it were possible to hook a 3.5 HDD to a note book. I guess i need the opposite of this adapter http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_...products_id=35

I realise i can get a kit that consists of a power adapter and a IDE to USB, but i wondered if it were possible ot make it the primary drive (coz USB ones always seem to **** up) and i realise that i will need a power adapter anyway because there is no way a laptop could power it.

Thx
Gints

PCMCIA wouldn't be the primary drive.. I think he's talking about using a 3.5" as the main drive (opening the laptop and having a 3.5" just sort of "hang" out of it connected to the internal 2.5 slot by the cable).

Clarification McGinty?

I doubt you can as the laptop is supplying 5v through the cable and the 3.5" drive needs 12v.

if your laptop could boot from USB you could use a USB to IDE converter. If you tries to run it directly instead of the 2.5" drive you would need to supply it 12V as markbuts3 has said.

Note. I am not sure if the USB external enclosures for HDD's would require seperate power supply as well.

in clarification,

yes i did want to run it as the primary drive, not PCMCIA or USB. The power issue is noted and fine, you can get AC adaptors that run to a molex and give the HDD it's power, i just wondered about the conversion between 3.5 to 2.5 IDE

cheers

Actually, that adapter in the first post is the adapter you need. It works just fine in 'reverse', just don't plug power into the adapter.

I had to use the adapter in that manner to install the OS from a full-sized IDE cdrom on my ultra-portable. Large (5MP) pic of the setup
