Winter CarPC Startup

Well, looks like winter is here ... snowed today and been freezing the last few weeks. My CarPC fails to boot first thing due to it being so cold. I think its the hard drive, anyone have any ideas how I can insulate the hard drive but at the same time not let it overheat???

It does eventually boot after 10 or so automatic reboots but I fear the drive won't last much longer ..... Any ideas??

I used to use these:
http://www.watlow.com/products/heaters/ht_flex.cfm
in my old work place to quickly heat up batteries in cold weather.

I suspect you can find a 12 volt blanket the size of the hard drive you could use to bring the hd up to operating temp in a short period of time.

Probably wouldn't be to hard to build one either. Just need resistive foil you can sandwhich between some insulating materials.

My boot (trunk) sensor was reading -7 Celsius this morning and mine started fine as my HDD is of the ball bearing type, although my LCD took a good few minutes to warm up.
I'm considering using a mirror demister element attached to the back of the screen so when the air-con is set to demist it would warm the screen, i bet the idea could be used to warm the HDD as well.

Shame the PSUs don't have a built in temperature sensor, that way we could automatically have the hdd etc warm up a little before they are powered on ...

I'm sure something could be rigged up by using a timer to the PSU and a relay to the element

Did you even read the faqs from bugbyte?

Edit: Just playing with you Gobby. Everyone seems to tell the noobs to search when they post a new thread. Funny to see it the other way around.

True! You have to draw the conclusion from the article. I'll fix it!
