Carful with your Sat Nav and In Car Computers
I know that this item is more to do with the sat nav systems that are being used now like tom tom etc, but I thought this was a warning which should go for those of us that dont fully integrate our systems etc too.
Does anyone have a clever way of hiding their equipment so it doesnt get pinched from their car?
Dave

Well no ****!
You leave $1000 worth of anything on your dashboard when you leave your car, you're asking for thieves to steal it. That's common sense.
How about taking your TomTom with you when you leave the vehicle? I don't know how particularly clever it is, but it poses the least risk of getting your expensive equipment stolen.

Not really what my point / question was though.
I asked HOW you go about removing or hiding things?
I know its common sense, however many still leave things on display, what do you suggest is done with the items?
What if they are fixed to something?
Thus my post.

Im going to go the dummy panel route. Recessed molded LCD with cover, possibly an old detachable radio face on it.

I'm making a motorized cover on the touchcreen. If the screen is on, the lid is open. The principle is simple and efective, but it only aplies to dash's where it can be aplied, and it is a little harder than a your average battery, switch plug electonics. When I'm finished, I'll post it here of course.

Be proactive - if you're going to be parking in a theft-prone area of town, hide it. When I'm going shopping, I park under lights or keep circling until I find a spot close to the building's entry.

Please post info when your finished. I attemted to do the samething your doing. I got half way through before I gave up. I was spending way too much time implementing it so I went with out the motorized cover.

Dear Dave,
No disrespect but it seems like you have been a member here for some time. I'm unsure if anyone has ever mentioned it to you in your time here, but have you done a ??
I mean the link you posted about getting your stuff stolen is wonderful, but as already pointed out it's common sense.
You asked about "HOW you go about removing or hiding things?" - what are you asking? Obviously you would remove them from your vehicle for best results. Sometimes just as well is to remove the items from plain site. In regards to your question, were you looking into ideas on methods for removing the items?
Here's one - when you suction cup your Tom Tom to the window, LICK the suction cup. That might help you remove and affix it easier.
In terms of "fixing your items to something" I wouldn't recommend using velcro or bubblegum. This seems obvious too....
Head units are typically 'fixed' but that doesn't stop someone from ripping it out. Same goes for screen, fabricating it into the dash won't keep someone from ripping it out.

I think no one posted initially because they thought you were kidding when you asked that question. I'll refer back to the searching notion, since it looks like we have yet another thread on 'securing your system/keeping it from being stolen, etc.'
Well, since lack of searching is still an issue around here - and believe me, I usually don't yell at ppl to search, I guess I can do it for you:
Carputers stolen thread, with talk about securing system:

Car stolen thread, post 31 starts discussing counter measures:

Screen hider, post 6 (I personally recommend this one 4 you) :

Motors to hide screen, pics broken but you may get good info from it:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...ghlight=Hiding
I only had like 10 mins to search for you, but there's more.
Some other ideas: - Car alarms - they still make them
- Don't park next to the car on blocks, stripped to its chassis
- Don't drive your car or park in public
- Don't tell everyone about your system, happened to me, someone stole my screen
- Don't park your car overnight outside
- Sleep in your car overnight
etc....
Have a nice day/cheers

Thank you for the info.
To be honest I would normally search, but as I had not slept properly in a few days due to my Mum being rushed into hospital I decided that I would just post something to take my mind off things a bit. However there is no way you could have known this so thank you for the reply that you posted
I appreciate you finding the stuff for me of course, however if I had wanted old answers I would have gone. I myself am perfectly aware of the common sense involved, just seemed to me that many would not be as still many people leave all their stuff on display. I even know of someone who had the ENTIRE dashboard ripped out of their car while they were shopping. How your meant to stop that happening is a mystery lol
Anywho, thanks again.
Dave
