Been hunting around on this forum for a few months, but just looking.

Now I'm ready to get my showcars PC's all sorted.

Already ordered Garmin Mobile PC with NZ Maps via Mapsource or something like that.

If there's anyone based in Wellington who wants to meet up to show me what their car PC is like or wants to share experiences with a newbie that would be cool.

Good to see little old NZ's name at the top of the forum! I have a fully operational PC in my 2000 Holden Rodeo 4x4. It does everything from MP3 playback to GPS navigation. I run the Media Engine or RR frontends and Windows XP SP2 on a PIII with 512MB of RAM, the interface is a 7inch motorised LCD touchscreen. The system has bluetooth, 802.11b/g wifi, and 10/100LAN capabilities. This site has been invaluable as a resource over the last year. My trucks pc specs are not that flash, but the system is stable, reliable and performs all tasks I can throw at it. I have to admit that there is little local support for the "carputer"enthusiast, so it would be great to see more Kiwis here.

Cheers,
Macca

ive been sourcing stuff from hong kong for alot of things, and the prices are GOOD and the freight is not a killer. plus most of the stuff ive seen on trade me is either crap or over priced.

myself and another mate in auckland have been getting into it.
im currently working out how far i want to go with fabrication, in my current car.. since im planning on buying a new car later this year.. but now with fuel over $2/L im thinking i might just drive my current car to its death rather than drop 10 or $15k on a new car i cant afford to use.

Yeah, hearing ya on the petrol thing..............

I've got it worse than most............

I've found a guy in Aussie who's offering good deals and have also thought about buying from this store as well......... freights not that bad.

You willing to share your contacts to buy ex Hong Kong ?

I'd like to have a PC that's reasonably small, want to include wifi and bluetooth in the box, but it seems it might be easier to do this with USB devices, just internal to the case rather than trying to find a device with it all built onboard..........

Just want it to be neat and tidy...........

im using bluetooth via usb, and will be putting a pci card in the case some time soon for the wifi, since alot of the usb wifi things are crap. otherwise the rest is a black box under my passenger seat.

yeah no worries re the contacts check your PM's.

Have you guys seen http://www.itx.co.nz/. I've used them a few times for the stuff that's only available over seas (i.e. automotive power supplies). Most stuff i source myself through the suppliers at my work (Saves a lot of money).

Also curious to know what you guys use for GPS in terms of software.

I'm using Garmin Mobile PC with these NZ Maps.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=139&pID=13484

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8467&pvID=2649

Also bought one of their GPS receivers also. $ 70 for receiver and only $ 100 for Receiver plus Mobile PC. $ 40 is well worth it I reckon. No idea why NZ maps are so pricey in relative terms, but overall it's just as cheap as buying a normal SATNAV system so.........
