So I got my PC IN the car. Sitting in the seat to be precise. Runs off inverter just fine after underclocking both video card and processer to fit in the output power margin. running psone lcd with vga mod. electric taped the rubber duck antenna to the rear view mirror and headed off to work. leaving my neighborhood I picked up 1 unsecure linksys router and got excited. I just knew I was going to get to work with a smile on my face. From my neighborhood to work I only picked up 1 other signal and it was at an intersection on a hill. I assume it was the local wireless internet provider.. I ignored it and drove on. All the way to work I didn't pick up 1 signal, but when I got off the work exit a scroll bar appeared in my netstumbler GUI. I picked up nearly 10 802.11 networks just from pulling onto the exit ramp! I pulled up to work (late already) and noticed that my work had a hotspot. Unfortunately it was t-mobile pay service. I then checked out the SSID labeled "mcdonalds" and connected with the password .. "ronald" and browsed the web for a few minutes and headed in to work. After leaving work I managed to pick up several routers and pieces of hardware broadcasting with 802.11 but when I pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot I was suddenly hit with 35 different Symbol brand wireless point of sale wands. All under WEP, of course. On an alternate course home through a residential are I also managed to pick up at least 6 wireless routers, ALL with no encryption. Wow. I'm impressed
So, all with a little tiny antenna I managed to pick up a total of 92 different devices using the 802.11 2ghz band for only about 30 minutes driving.
Just imagine what you can do with a bigger antenna. I'm waiting on mine right now!
Now, here's the question. Are USB GPS receivers capable of working with netstumbler? What software can I use to map the 802.11 devices that I pick up in my journies? Can I easily map coordinates received and recorded with netstumbler to an application such as streets and trips? If not, what? What do you guys run?
